For all you XBoxer's, the next 1 will always be online and connected.
It was a 'concept' last month, and now it's confirmed.

Whoever wrote the article is a bit dim. The quotes from Microsoft say that it will be 'Always on', not online. And anyway, why would Microsoft do such a thing? Most of their profit probably comes from Xbox Live, which you have to pay for. The greedy bastards.

It seems to be after reading the second and or third paragraph of the quote, the always on is to minimize time starting the console and downloading updates, ie it updates when you're not playing.
As far as that kind of connection, I dont mind anyways since about 100% of my gaming on my 360 slim is in the form of online multiplayer.

Never had a console, don't think I ever intend buying one.

Well this just outright sucks.
For the first time, I'm considering a PS4. :hmmm: Or maybe I just won't get a next-gen console. I like the xbox 360 elite that I have now....but it's on its last leg I think...

I still have the PS1 I bought back in '96. Haven't taken it out of the drawer since '03.

Click bait headline strikes again!
Its all leaks and teasers, plus I believe that the source link completely misinterpreted the leak on purpose.

The "always online" part is in the second paragraph, now please read it carefully. Compare the wording with Microsoft's wording here:
"In Windows 8, Microsoft introduces Connected Standby - a new power state that enables compatible PCs to be always reachable and up-to-date. This session will provide an overview of Connected Standby, including key user scenarios, system architecture and technical requirements. "
The idea is simple, its connected standby on xbox. What is connected standby? it like how your phone can still receive messages and call when it is asleep. It is a "hibernation" mode for your computer, phone, tablet, or xbox that allows is to sleep while staying connected to the network.
If you read the leak carefully, you will see that it is probably 99.9% describing connected standby. It makes no mention to "forced xbox live subscription" or anything like that at all. I repeat, if you actually read the leak, it makes NO MENTION of anything that even sounds like Microsoft is forcing you to buy xbox live gold.
PS: if you want to know more about connected standby, watch this video:

It's not that the forced XBLG is bad...it's the whole "Staying connected" thing I don't like.
I hear Valve is releasing the Steambox. I haven't taken a good look at it yet but it already looks better than this "Xbox"

Considering that they used almost the exact same terminology with connected standby, I am almost 100% certain it is the same feature. Considering that connected standby is optional in windows I am willing to bet that it is optional on the xbox too.

That's a big 10-4 mister.
As long as Microsoft messes around with their consoles, they aren't messing around with our PC world too much. It is bad enough that we can't have PC games without having to connect to play. Hear me Ubisoft? Steam?

I'm still not a big fan of this feature. IIRC the Wii did the same thing. It shut off but stayed in some sort of "Standby" mode. I didn't like it and that thing didn't suck up my internet connection. Hopefully this feature is optional.
Has anybody heard anything lately about the Steambox? I hear there will also be a new handheld thing from Nvidia. :hmm2:

Same here buddy. Heck, if this feature isn't optional and you need it to play games, well....M$ won't be getting any money out of me for the thing.

Update:

Things may change of course before release, but, Microsoft is pretty firm in its stance on online requirements so far.

:hmmm: the article basically says: "some say so, some say so..."
The same as tyrant said in post 11 still applies for this "new revelation".
Still hoping MS won't force an always-on requirement, simply for the fact that I prefer the Xbox controller over the one from the PS. :)
However my final decisin will be based on the usefullness of each console as a media center for our living room.
