Re- posted from FlakMonkey's New Interiors mod thread:

:salute: Having just seen this brilliant interior mod for SH3 FM New Interiors V2.1 (Thank you FlatMonkey :D) I have decided it's time to head back to Kiel with my SH5 U-boat, it needs a long refit I think, having sustained heavy damage to the hull after a long and arduous depth charging off the English East Coast, which nearly sent us to a watery grave.

On reaching Kiel, the band and all the lovely nurses were not there to greet us, even though the sun was shining, which I thought very strange indeed. Back on the old boats, they were always there when we entered and left Port. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed U444 my old SH3 boat in dry dock. Oh how I wished I could command my old boat again because the urge to get back to sea was getting to me.

Suddenly, I saw Thompson staggering along the jetty, half pi..ed as usual and he urged me to contact Bdu for a transfer. To my pleasant surprise, Admiral Donitz welcomed the idea and I was given command of my old U-boat again U444, looking splendid with a new coat of dark grey paint, almost ready for sea again. Last time I saw her she was looking rather sad and rusty (hence my user name) but once back in the Atlantic again, she would soon get her rusty stains back again.:yeah:
Within a few days with a belly full of torpedo's we would be making our long voyage, back through the Kiel Canal, for our journey across the North Sea again and on to the hunting grounds, looking for convoys that cross the North Atlantic. It would feel good to be in command once more, especially on my old, now not so rusty U-boat.

Sorry guys, I'm getting carried away here, that's what Silent Hunter does to me. So I hope all you guys here on the SH3 forums, will allow me to re-join the Grey Wolves again after such a long absence and become a SH3 wolf pack member again. I might need a bit of a refresher, getting used to all the new mods now available for the best SH of all. I think I am going to enjoy being amongst old friends again as it has been several years, since I stepped aboard one of the old boats. It seems I got comfy with the new surroundings of the SH5 U-boats, but somehow they don't have the same stink of sweat and diesel as the old SH3 boats and I really miss that.

First things first though, I need to gather some of the new mods that are now available. I will be installing GWX Gold again that's for certain, and FM's New Interior V 2.1 :arrgh!: So if any of you guys can recommend what other mods I may need to go with these 2 mods, I would appreciate your suggestions, as long as they are compatible of course. I don't want to add something that will interfere with GWX. :nope:

So good hunting guys, we may come across each other in mid Atlantic somewhere during one of our patrols.

Well, we don't know that for sure, but I'm not gonna be the one to ask him. :O:

it is my fault RustySubmarine misspelled Flakmonkey...I started it. I used my wife's chalkboard in the kitchen this morning to write Flakmonkey 100 times...won't misspell it again :D

RustySubmarine,
I earlier suggest the Merchant Fleet mod v 3.2, but forgot to mention MFM3.2 displacement correction mod....a small fix for it. Hitman Optics for GWX3 v.1 is also a nice addition to GWX.

If you are not using SH3Commander.....get it! http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=147237&highlight=sh3commander

Hi Kelly can't find The Merchant Fleet mod. Looked through all the Subsim SH3 downloads. Have you a link for it? :o

The link for the download is at the bottom of the first post in the following thread:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=170741 The file is hosted on Gamefront.

The skin download links for MFM are there as well.

If you have not done so already I would recommend using the 4GB patch. MFM and others can really tax the memory. The 4GB patch lets SH3 use 4GB of memory instead of the 2GB its orginally configured to use. Here's the link to it: http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php

Thank's a lot Kelly, just downloaded the MF Fleet & Skins. Not sure where to extract 4gb patch to with Winrar?

Read through the recent 4GB patch thread for instruction on how to install it.

Another mod to take a look at for use with GWX is M.E.P v3: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=158991

Good hunting :salute:

Hi ninja,
Yes it's good to be back with SH3 again, after quite a few years. Not always are the latest sims the best. Thank you for your list of Mods, I think I have most of those installed, missing the wet weather oilskins, wooden life boats, sobers green waves, compass fix and a few others. I probably have them in my SH3 Downloads Folder, as I downloaded lots of SH3 files from a few years ago. Must check for updates on some of them though, as it's been a few years since I was aboard my old boat. What's the Fanfare mod?

Cheers
Geoff

The Fanfare mod is the music the band plays at the dock when you come home. There are several mods that change the song they play.

Hi RustySubmarine

As you mentioned not having the Extreme Wet Weather I recommend that as when standing on the bridge with my lookouts in severe weather, I actually feel wet and cold if they're still in their fair weather clothes :haha: It does add a bit of atmosphere. I highly suggest using the Thomsen's Sound Pack as well.

What's the Fanfare mod?

As HW3 answered. I have yet to use this mod as I start my patrols outside the harbour but once I'm refitted I'll leave port and listen to some fine music.

Yes definitely installing Thompsons Sound Mod, had this when I played it several years ago. Must get the Fanfare and Oilskins loaded too, If the weather is anything to go by what its like outside at the moment I am going to need them. Roll on Summer. Brrrr fed up with all this snow!

Ah I've just visited my mother over the weekend who lives in the north east and it was still very cold and windy :nope:

Then on wednesday I'm off to the north west...maybe I should just emigrate instead?

I live just north of Birmingham, we don't seem to do so bad as far as the weather is concerned, compare to the north, but I think we have all copped it this time.

Just updated my Signature with my Rusty Submarine. Type IX40C U534 taken at Birkenhead in 2006. Since then it has been cut up into four sections and is now displayed at the new Nautical Museum near the Birkenhead Ferry Terminal. Well worth a visit.

The sub was raised by a Danish Salvage Company and brought to The Historic Ships Museum. This museum has now been closed and the sub can be seen at the new museum. It was sunk off Denmark in the Kattegat in 1945 bya torpedo from an enemy aircraft. All the crew except two survived.

Hi RustySubmarine.

Thanks for the info about the museum in Birkenhead. Coincidentally I was planning on visiting it this summer after reading about it in "Grey Wolf" by Gordon Williamson. My wife's family live in Ellesmere Port so only a stone throw away :salute:

I'll try and put some info/photos in a new topic for anyone that might be interested after the visit.

My sister lived in Elsmere Port for a while just off the Motorway near the Boat Museum. Sadly she passed away a few years ago with the dreaded (C)
Whilst a Birkenhead, have a ride on one of the old trams if you can, they run from the Ferry Terminal to the Woodside Tram Depot where you can see quite a number of restored trams and buses. Its about a one mile return journey from the ferry.

Regarding U534, when it was where it is in the photo, The Historic Ships Museum, together with Rothsay Class Frigate HMS Plymouth, Oberon Class Submarine HMS Onyx and Minesweeper HMS Bronnington (Prince Charles was in command of this when he served in the RN).
U534 was open for the public to view inside, on a special guided tour, by timed ticket only. Everything inside was left as it was when salvaged. It was very interesting walking all through the various compartments, but everything was rusted over. When the HSM closed, due to site redevelopment, HMS Plymouth went to Plymouth Dockyard, HMS Onyx went to Barrow-in-Furness, where it was built (not sure where HMS Bronnington went) and U534 stayed on site for a year or two, until it was decided to move it to the new Nautical Museum. It had to be cut up into four sections, so it could be transported. It is now on display again but has been painted to prevent further detireation on the outside. It is the only German Submarine in the UK. Other UK Subs to visit, are HMS Oberon at Chatham Dockyard, HMS Onyx at Barrow and a number of various types at The Submarine Museum, Gosport which is well worth a visit. Pity they had to cut up U534, as it was more authentic when it was viewable in one piece, but I suppose it could have been scrapped if what happened to save it, hadn't taken place.

I know that area. I actually run down there along the canal. I live within walking distance near Cheshire Oaks, which you'll know :yep: Incidentally I got married in the Holiday Inn

And sorry guys if we seem to be hogging the forum exchanging visiting ideas. Nice to find someone who knows familiar places with a common interest.

Gotcha! I like the Wirral, it's a nice part of Cheshire. I like Chester too! Well better get back to patrolling the Atlantic, I'm just south west of the Cannaries atm in grid DH 54. Very quiet, sea state moderate. 17 hours before I decide to move further north, unless BdU orders me somewhere else.

Good hunting Ninja, catch you later sometime.

Ditto to all that. I love Chester. Until Colchester I had lived in Cambridge all my adult life. Chester is a nice substitute :salute:
