La Rochelle?

Sorry for making this a new thread, but I could not find a definitive answer.

I'm back to sh3 and gwx (and more :D), and before starting a new career I'd like to know two things:

- Is is possible to be stationed in La Rochelle? I cannot find the port on sh3 commander (even by selecting a later date like 1942). Since I want to start in 1939 I guess I can request the transfer in 1941, right?
- What happens when I transfer? Will I get a totally new crew?

Answer on No 2 : No you get to keep your Uboot and crew as it is.

If you wish to use La Rochelle due to the use in the film Das Boot... be aware of a couple of things.

first, the real U-96 on which the novel and film are based upon, sailed from St. Nazaire not la rochelle.

Second, La rochelle was only used and referenced in the film because that port had changed very little since the conclusion of the second world war and would appear more authentic on film ( the das boot novel correctly uses St. Nazaire )

third, la rochelle was the base of operations for the 3rd flotilla which was briefly non existent in late 1939 and through 1940 and as such i dont believe it is even included as an option in SH3

La pallice was actually used as a u-boat base for the 3rd flotilla - the base was only briefly switched to la rochelle fairly late in the war before being redeployed to bases in Norway.

i am 95% sure it is not possible in SH3 or GWX to use la rochelle as a base of operations

I guess I'll start from (or transfer to) St. Nazaire, then. I hope there will be the uboat-pens there, I always started in Wilhelmshaven .
And I probably need to read the novel, I'll search for It right now ^^

PS: yeah I watched Das Boot for the second time just yestarday :)

Alternative Flotillas

This mod replaces the 11th U-boat Flotilla based in Norway with the 3rd U-boat Flotilla based in La Rochelle, France from October 1941 until September 1944, when the 3rd Flotilla historically deactivated and its U-boats left La Rochelle for Norway. The 11th Flotilla becomes available in Bergen, Norway upon deactivation of the 3rd U-boat Flotilla.

Sweet - i forgot all about the alternative flotillas.:D

just enable in GWX and you should be good to go. however if it makes any difference to you - go with U-96 in St. Nazaire... thats where she really was, the movie gods just threw her into the 3rd flotilla / la rochelle for their own film making convenience. :up:

Don't forget the run through the Straights of Gibralta and see if you can avoid what happened in the film. :doh:
