Lieutenant Commander Ray Green USS Narwhal(SS-167)
was on a cruise and training deployment by wake island when war broke out order west of wake incase the Japanese decide to invade,December 11 early morning ran into a group looks like 3 light cruisers and two transports with no destoyers moving in now, keeping my eyes open for destoyers if none is spotted the attack plan is to take the cruisers out with the first round of torpedoes and has the fish load hammer the transports with the 6 inchers.

Was this a surface attack? Heavy flooding in the engine room is NOT good at all....

If you use Travs mod, it can take weeks for equipment to fix. If you get 100% destroyed bulkheads, the water never pumps out.

Last career with it, I was like the Wahoo, on the surface, but flooded and sub at 22 ft. I could only make 5 kts. I was afraid to dive, so took the shallow route home.

One time I was in about 200 ft, 3 compartments flooded, two 100% destroyed, sitting on the bottom. I could do nothing to surface. Luckily I was near land, so I basically crawled almost to the beach, but finally got to where I got air. It took 5 days before I could head home without sinking from the surface.

I guess its time for a update, been in the patrol area for two weeks.I have one merchant sunk, ran into a escort carrier, one merchant and one destroyer,In a night surface attack I put three torpedoes into the carrier and one into the merchant,as I was getting ready to launch another torpedo at the merchant the destroyer spoted me and open up.I did manage get the torpedo off but the destroyer was heading at me with a full steam after getting the shot off I crash drove for a few minutes I thought I waited to long,i was at 175 feet as he came over droping charges, some of them exploded close but no damage right now
sitting at 235 feet.i do have screenshots but don't remember where they are store at in the game

This is why you periodically submerge and listen.

For screen shots I never use the in game keys. I just hit print screen and then add it to GIMP. I prefer to see what I am getting when I get it. In all the times I have alt'ed out of the game it never crashes or causes issues. Which I couldn't believe.

I've found Mk 14's to be pretty darn reliable if you use them correctly. :hmmm:

Slow
Shallow
Detonate on contact
Angle other than 90 degrees

There's your 4 steps to not having a dud. I have more problems with the Mk 23's than I do the 14's.

Don't give up so easily. Manual targeting is harder than auto, and takes time to master. Nobody gets it overnight.

Have you been plotting out your approaches?

les green01
04-06-13, 09:00 PM
i have try to plot the approaches don't even understand how to do that I made a mission to practice with a ship going 5 knots out of 6 torpedoes only one struck home guess more reading is in store for me and more practice.

Hang in there Les. I'm going to "Manual Targeting School" in May and I'm sure will share your same frustration. It's not easy but I'm sure will be very satisfying when you get the hang of it.

But you know what, if it's taking too much of the fun out of the sim for you, stay with auto. You want to have fun. :)

I don't understand any of it even with solution solver

Look at the bright side Les. At least you're not the subject of an Article 32 hearing. :O:

There's nothing wrong with just using auto, I still do even though I can fire manual if I wished (granted not as well as with auto).

Plotting is part art and part science. I'm not really sure which is the larger part. :03: The idea is to make use of what you know (through observation), to find out what you don't (speed and course). In practice, range and AoB will only be known approximately, so the whole business becomes tricky. Anyway, it can be difficult when you are tired or distracted. I know I've botched my share of set-ups.
