Nice!

I want to get into ship modeling sometime....I just don't have time now...

Cause it's baseball season.... Maybe this summer, I'll invest in a model of a Balao or Gato....or maybe a Type VII or IX....

Idk. A Typhoon Class sounds fitting....with a Los Angeles Class on the same shelf.... :smug:

Cool! This new version comes with actual wooden deck planking and lots of etched brass detail parts, but in fact is underneath the same Matchbox kit that's been available since 1978. Have fun with it.

So you want to get into RC boats?

:salute:

Well, the first advantage is the learning curve is a lot more forgiving and less costly than this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BulBMIYQ_g

Things you'll need to build your boat:

Space. Space to build the boat and space to display/store your boat.

A myriad of expensive tools.:dead: (tablesaw, drillpress:dead:)
*note, you'll need to learn how to solder, which isn't hard, just needs practice.

Money. It is expensive at first and the kit is the least of your expences. A good bulk of your spending will go to the electronics (radio), but it is well worth it in the long run:up:.

Time. This isn't something you're going to have done in a week, so it does require a level of patience.

oh, someplace to sail your boat. Ponds are great.:D

WANT!

I already have plenty of Radio gear from my RC car and 4x4 days, would it be possible to fit a reciever, ESC, battery etc from an RC car into a boat and just buy a motor? Obviously waterproof it too, although I have almost fully submerged my Land Rover in a river and drove it out lol.

Built her many moons ago as a kid but as a static model...needed a lot of photo-etch and actually looks pretty small on a boating lake.

I've a 1/96 (7') HMS Illustrious kit in the garage (had been stored in the loft for over 25 years) with all the fittings and running gear if you want to fly over and collect...she's yours :)

I did some 1/2400 Flowers for wargaming a long time ago. I noticed at the time that a few rare ones had the mast in front of the bridge rather than behind. Looking at pictures now I see that Morden was one of those.

Talking to McBee on Skype last night made me pull out my little wargaming Flowers and take pictures. I didn't technically "build" them because they come as one piece, and only need to be painted. GHQ makes the most detailed, beautiful models possible. The bigger ships have many parts to glue on, but the destroyers are single-piece models. I have many painted and mounted, and a lot more just sitting in their packages waiting for "someday" to come.

Anyway, these are GHQ's 'Flower' class corvettes. They're nothing compared to the detail available when constructing a 1/72 scale kit, but they're cute in their own way.

Update.

I'm making serious progress on my boat. I need to post the pictures I've taken, plus take new ones, but I can't find my camera atm:dead:.

I've got my brass prop:up: installed, custom made brass rudder installed, motor installed (English made motor:D), Some of the wood/balsa deck installed,

In regards to the name of the boat, I'm still thinking of the Morden, but she has 2 masts:o (one forward of the bridge) and her 4inch gun doesn't have the gun shield.

http://www.naval-museum.mb.ca/ships/morden.htm

I could do the HMS Arbutus (killer of the U-70 or U-47) or the HMCS Chilliwack (2 u-boat kills)

Bump/ I'm back to working on this. I got all of the RC stuff wired and working. I'm having some minor issues with the smoke generator, but I'm back in business.:Kaleun_Party:

Making great progress, its starting to come together. I've been building it in sections. I've weathered the hull and I started on the bridge last night.

Nice model. But your engine sounds a littly bit to loud (high rpm). What type did you use? With a 3-blade-prop (Raboesch or similar) you only need max. 4500rpm for this ship. I used 2 Speed 600 (ca. 18000rpm) at 7,2V in my Graupner Commodore - she went up to 35km/h fully gliding over the water.

It has a gear ratio of 6:1.

I don't remember who made the prop, but its 3 blade bronze.

Super nice Jason! Are you going to add a bit of ballast? Looks to me if she rides a bit lower in the water she will not be rolling to her side in the tight turns.

Yes, I threw some ballast in the stern, but it wasn't glued down:o, it did shift:o I need to put some additional ballast in the bow, where the battery is.

Are you using LiPo batteries? Powerful but light. The battery pack(standard) I used on mine was positioned as ballast. I could still use a bit more ballast. She looks great!

NiMH 8.4v
I want to put one of those sound boards in it, but they're really expensive.
I may just go ghetto and buy a cheap mp3 player and loop a sonar ping sound effect. That's all I really want to do.

Needs more research...

LiPo is expensive but for some applications like aircraft they are great. I like the harbor sounds module! Looking forward to seeing the completed model!

Not sure how many channels tour Tx has but if sufficeient I'd have that single gun rotating...the smoking stack was really impressive

Wish granted! I plan too hook the gun up to the rudder.:D

These look sound pretty cool:

The whooper, sonar, and steam engine.:hmmm: If I could do all three?:hmmm::hmmm::hmmm:

If I were to pick only one sound, it's hard to choose between the whooper and the sonar.:hmmm::hmmm:

I want to do programmable sound effects (like an mp3 player) but those sound modules are expensive. ~$200.:hmmm:

The whooper every time...you wouldn't normally hear the sonar.

1 vote for whooper.

I did find a Canadian company that has a triple expansion steam engine sound effect... :hmmm: But their unit is fairly expensive.:shifty:

I just emailed these guys:

Kinda spendy, but that would be so cool.:sunny:

The plus side with these guys, I could totally customize the sounds.

Just wanna say I finally bought one of these beasts! :D

I managed to find the old boxing of it though, I didn't really wanna pay twice the price for all the PE bits cos they're likely to get broken by me as I'm also gonna RC it up :) I'm aiming for HMS Poppy meaning only a small amount of scratchbuilding will be needed. I'm very excited lol.

Needs a rack to hold Testor's paint bottle filled with matchheads and a cannon wick. Estes ignitors to light them and something to roll them off yet. :D
