Lieutenant Commander George Miller is the commander of the USS Grayback (SS-208), a Gar Class fleet boat.

Ordered to proceed to Vella Lavella to insert an Australian Coastwatching Team and then conduct Anti-Shipping Operations in The SLOT. (Not again.... )

Destroyer and a Subchaser at long range. I did not engage.

Met up with them later on. The DD detected me this time.

Currently sitting at 288 feet waiting them out. The two ships are dead in the water almost directly above me. Looks like I'll survive this one.

EDIT: I take that back. In addition to the subchaser and destroyer....a 10 SHIP TASK FORCE HAS SHOWN UP! There are 8 DD's and 2 Cruisers from what I could ID with my External Camera. Man, just my luck....

EDIT2: I once again suffered heavy bow flooding, surfaced, and fought with the deck gun. There were 3 DD's up top. I killed one, disabled another, and forced the other one to retreat...but then....along came an A6M2 that finished me off. I am going to retry this patrol since it was the first of the career.

lol... Two deaths in a row!

Two deaths from the same problem.

Bow Torpedo flooding...

Once I get that 80-90 degree down angle..... BLOW BALLAST AND BACK EMERGENCY!

This time...I actually beat 2 destroyers in a gun battle. I love the Gar Class and it's big deck gun.

I've done that in SH3....but as I've said before...I've never been attacked directly in SH4 until yesterday.

My targets are usually lone merchants and unsuspecting warships. When the Warships start acting as a team....well.....I'm screwed I guess. I'll need to get better if I want to beat the Japs.

Is there any boats that have duel deck guns? like in real life?

There's the Narwhal sub. I don't think you can use the TMO version in a campaign.

You need the Glove Mod for that ;)

I tried this patrol again.

Reached the insertion point for the Aussie team.

Got rammed by a subchaser. It exploded on top of me and took me down with it.

:dead: Going to have to try again.

I've actually done some pretty awesome things with the Narwhal in the Single Missions. I just need it in Campaign. I don't know how to do that.

The Gar has the 5/51 Deck Gun. It's like the heaviest (Usable) one in the game. :)

I would...but I don't have the means to donate to Subsim. If I could, I would've done it a long time ago.

You can use the Narwhal with TMO, but think you have to get it starting in Pearl.

If you want some realistic fun with TMO, load Travs mod. It's a fairly realistic damage model. What I like is you can actually sink even surfaced.
However, one or two shells from a escort, you're basically dead.

I wrote this once on surviving an out of control dive. Needs some edit work, but you may want to give it a read.

Last I looked in was in mods section, but I think it was version 2.1. There is a 2.2. The only thing I don't like about it is often you get too many planes hunting you. He made some planes that will just shadow you high up, they don't attack, just call in assets. The hunting times and contact ranges are much longer, so ships and planes will come from a long way to search if they're in the contact range zone

Not only will you sink from the surface, you can sit on the bottom without taking damage, which can come in handy.

The sub damage model is tough, but the AI is a tad weaker, although you can install an optional mod to restore the AI back to TMO.

Oh, some planes will drop torps on you, so watch out for those.

If you want to send me your email, I can email you ver 2.2, try it out. If the planes are too much, I can make you a small mod to tone them down.
Main thing is not to be seen by planes, moreso if near several air base in an area like Formosa. You get caught in Formosa, you usually have to stay dived until night due to all the planes searchin.

Course it has many other changes, so read the readme that comes with it.

Mine too, and I much prefer it that way!

When the Warships start acting as a team....well.....I'm screwed I guess.
Your family of skippers seem to be real shell magnets. Maybe they should have considered the Army... :D

I can sympathize, though. I've had at least two careers in RFB S-boats terminated by Japanese aircraft. Who knew their pilots can see 200' below the surface?

Wow, that sounds good, and bad :)

As long as you have the mod to make the AI stronger again, IM SO DOWN :)

Let me know you got it. When you unzip it you'll see the folder, don't install that as a mod, open it, inside you'll see the mod, an optional mods folder and the original TMO AI mod. Instal Trav mod, any optional mods, then Original TMO AI mod. Make sure you read the Doc. that list all the changes.

One thing you'll notice instead of a repair crew, you'll see two slots for Mr. Fix it and the Medic. Place them there.

I don't believe he listed the change, but it crew health gets below a certain point, they don't function at all. He had it set at 90% once and I told him it needed to be lower. I think 2.2 has them set at 50%, so if they fall below that level, they don't function. This basically means they're bedridden.

If you want an even stronger AI, let me know, I'll work another mod for you.

OH, If you use OTC, then Travs mod will overwrite 90% of it and vice versa, so they really don't work together.

Okay. Reporting in after my first patrol.

(Quite possibly the luckiest patrol ever in my experience)

Sailed from Brisbane in October 1942 to insert an Aussie Spec Ops team.

Deployed team successfully with only a PB 103/105 thing detected. I waited until it passed and deployed the troops.

Sailed out a ways and then I requested a new patrol area. They sent me to patrol around Guam and Saipan. I didn't see anything for a week. I decided to hit Truk and the harbors around it.

When I reached the opening of the Harbor Channel at the South side, there was a horrible storm. NO VISIBILITY AT ALL! I couldn't believe it. I ran at ~200 feet along the channel until I came to the first port at around midnight. I waited a few hours for the storm to end and it ended about 0300 after going since 1600. I popped up to radar depth during the storm to see if there was anything out there in the rain.

I found a goldmine....

I sank 40,000 tons within 5NM of my first position. 2 Nippon Marus and some other ones until I ran out of torpedoes.

I plotted a course along the bottom of the channel that runs South to North. I made it out without being detected. I plotted a course to Brisbane and sat back while i transited.

ENEMY AIRCRAFT SPOTTED!

2 Zeroes came out of nowhere. Didn't even show up on Radar. Dived right out of the clouds and hit my stern bad.

Bulkheads, Torp Tubes, etc. All damaged.

I shot down one plane but 8 more showed up. That's when I knew....I had to risk a dive or else I was going to die right here, right now. I quickly dived but lost control. I made some quick adjustments to the engines and now I was running at 188 feet at 1 knot.

I regained control of my sub. The thing had a bad Stern down angle...but it kept depth fine. I managed to wait out the planes and surface

New Radar Contact!

:dead:

*Checks map*

TASK FORCE! coming at me very fast.

I quickly dived to 200 feet and stayed at my 1 knot speed. Destroyers and Recon Planes searched for me for 2 days while I ran at 200 feet and 1 knot. They never found me. They pinged and pinged away...but only 5-6 depth charges.

When they left, I lost control of my sub again and had to blow ballast. On the surface, there was another Zero...but it was quickly shot down by my still operating Twin 20mm Flak Gun and my expert Watch Officer.

I was a LOOONNNNGGG way from Tulagi...the closest friendly port. I had enough fuel to get there at flank speed. I managed to repair some of my damaged systems. Compressor, Tubes, I got my crew berthing bulkhead fixed, and my deck stuff fixed.

I steamed into Tulagi for a refit and made it back to Brisbane at 20 knots after 2 months of action. I don't think I have been on a luckier patrol. I received the Navy Commendation Medal and gave the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal to my three Watch Officers that kept the planes at bay.

How's that for a Sunday afternoon? :)

Reporting in

After the previous patrol, I transferred to SubPac at Midway.

I was ordered to patrol off of Bougainville and commence Anti Shipping operations. No contacts with the enemy. Going to try my luck at the Truk islands again.

Hopefully...it all goes well this time.

Reporting to Midway after successful patrol.

No dice on Bougainville. I steamed off to Truk again. I sank 38,541 tons of Japanese Shipping and received the Navy Cross for my actions.

Sub is undergoing a refit while the crew gets the well needed rest after a couple of exhausting days submerged.
