3:U-571-silly but great action and soundtrack
2:Flyboys-entertaining despite being at bit slow at times
1:Pearl Harbor-love story sucks but I love the Doolittle Raid scene
That's my list feel free to post your own.

I liked Fortress....and I love Pearl Harbor.
U-571 is eh...
Don't care to see Windtalkers. I hate Nicholas Cage with a passion.
I like Red Tails. That kind of counts as a guilty-pleasure War Movie.
Saints and Soldiers: Airborne Creed was good too...

Flyboys and Windtalkers both make my list of films that I really shouldn't like but secretly pop in the DVD player when I think no one is around. There are a few non-war movies that fall on list as well. The list, howerver, does not include such films as The Final Sacrifice and Radar Secret Service, which are so terrible as to be amazing. There most certainly is a line where kitch becomes camp.

Why are those guilty pleasures? They're both good movies. Indeed those are great movies, although they are great movies that tended to be rated low by critics (which was kinda the requirement for the list).

I should add anything that was on Mystery Science Theater 3000 to my list.

"Taras Bulba" with Yul Brynner.
"Kings of the Sun" with Yul Brynner.
"Viva Maria" with Bridget Bardot and George Hamilton.
"The Fall of the Roman Empire"
"The Charge of the Light Brigade" 1960's version.
All great films but for one reason or another didn't get the punters in.
A bit off topic now, but 2 more great films which don't get much of a mention, probably cause they're silent movies :-
"The General" with Buster Keaton,
and
"Intolerance" (at least the siege of Babylon bits, amazing stuff.)

In no particular order:
The Battle of Britain - 'nuff said.
The Big Red One - saw this so many times on HBO it wasn't even funny.
Kelley's Heroes - stop it with those negative waves, man.
Apocalypse Now - "NEVER GET OUT OF THE BOAT!"
The Beast - back when the mujahadeen (sp?) were bros.

The guilt comes with the number of times I've seen them. You would think I could've found some others to latch onto by now. :)

Oh, I can answer this question.
So, say a "guy" had a copy of a certain movie hidden in his office. Black case.... so, when no other subsimmers are around, this guy sneaks out his black case edition of.....say....
"Crash Dive"
...and pops it in the dvd player and thoughly enjoys the movie, never, ever, skipping ANY scenes.
That is a guilty pleasure movie.:D

A 'Guilty Pleasure' is something everybody thinks is bad, and you understand that it probably is bad, but you watch it anyway. As I said, I can't think of any Guilty Pleasure war movies I watch, but I have several in other genres. There are some truly great movies that I just don't like, and there are some truly bad movies I have in my collection, and like to watch from time to time. Those are 'Guilty Pleasures'.
Here's an example:
The Outlaw Josey Wales is most definitely not a guilty pleasure, being in my belief one of the best movies Clint Eastwood ever did.
On the other hand I have The Beguiled in my collection. I like it because it's the only movie I can think of in which Clint played the bad guy, and the only one I can think of where he dies at the end, and deservedly so. That aside, it is generally considered an awful movie, and deep inside I agree, but I like it and I watch it.
That is a Guilty Pleasure.

K-19 is not a bad movie. I liked it. I have certainly seen better, but it is hardly bad enough to qualify for guilty pleasure. For me, it is definitely U-571.

Okay...corrected but for what it is worth, I've been told I've seen those movies too much = guilty...thing??? Maybe its my Baptist upbringing?
Anyhow.
Ditto on the Joesy Wales, as I will always stop on that gem. Also High Plains Drifter as you can't beat a horror/western ("this place looks like hell,").
Okay. How about Fifth Element? Love that bastard.
Shoot. I've derailed the snot out of this. Sorry.

I'm Catholic and it seems like they are always trying to stick me with something bad I've done. (Not trying to insult anyone...it's just how i see it sometimes)

"Why can't you be more like your brother?"
"My son, The Doctor."
Well, we haven't derailed it too far, since we're still talking about guilt. And there haven't been too many new postings about movies. Still...
Since I mentioned some non-war movies, I'll continue.
Enchanted.
Juno.
(500 Days Of) Summer.
All good movies in their own way, but none of them meant to be enjoyed by a single 60-year-old man. And I own all three. Hence, Guilty Pleasure.
Oh, I also like the first Hulk and both Fantastic Four movies. So there.
Oh, and Crash Dive? I said right off the bat in my thread about it that my whole "Best submarine movie ever" schtick was a joke, and I bought it sight unseen, and the only thing I really wanted to show was the color footage of early Elco 77-foot boats and S-Boats, so Platapus can shut right up and go back to sleep.

Do you remember the A&E commercials with actors acting out roles from other movies, but in their homes? Lisa Kudrow did the "wire hangers" speech and woke up her new baby. "It's alright, honey. Mommie's just pretending."

:) I guess I have not fully comprehended the term 'guilty pleasure'.
Does it perhaps mean enjoying something that is forbidden or frowned
upon?
If that's the case - then probably only 300 (2007) fits that category.:)
(although IMO this movie was/is totally underestimated - it is highly
successfull in bringing a comic book on the big screen - and it
works - at least for me).
As to Tora! Tora! Tora! - I agree. It's a great movie and the Japanese
are portrayed as human beings rather than just deliver caricatures
of evil and cruel men...
The total opposite - and an abysmal movie is Michael Bay's
Pearl Harbor (2001)...

It usually refers to something you really love and enjoy, but feel bad about loving and enjoying because it's considered "bad" by some generally accepted standard.
Enjoying "Das Boot" or some other critically acclaimed, successful, really well done movie: not a guilty pleasure.
Enjoying some cheesy, badly written, badly acted, critically panned, flop of a film despite the fact that it is all those things: that's a guilty pleasure. On paper, and by general consensus, it shouldn't give you one iota of pleasure to watch it. And yet it does, and so you do.
The total opposite - and an abysmal movie is Michael Bay's
Pearl Harbor (2001)...
Now, see, if you admitted to enjoying "Pearl Harbor" despite how abysmal you know it is - that would be a guilty pleasure. :yep:

I guess I have to put War of the Dead in here. It's a WW2 zombie movie and it is a sad excuse for a movie...
But heck...I'm a sucker for good zombie action. It's about an American sent in to help the Finns in their war with the Soviets in 1941. They go in to destroy this secret German bunker which turns out to be supplying zombies after an experiment went wrong. It has horrible acting, dialogue, special effects, and story premise. It's a Lithuanian film. I rented it just for the heck of it the other night. By the end, I liked it. No matter how bad the story is in a zombie movie, I can get into it eventually. The fact that I even watched it is a guilty pleasure.
It's still better than The Walking Dead though... :yep: :yeah:
