03/02/1940 1147...approx 0deg east...57deg. north...weather light fog...clear skies...sighted edge of convoy with multiple escorts...radioed for help regarding other uboats in the area...BDU advised no other uboats in the area...latest hydrophone check...seems to be medium size convoy heading north at medium speed...not proceeding with an attack...tracking convoy till daylight as it is too dark to retrieve any information on ship numbers or type at night...fuel level 89%...

04/02/1040 0715...sunrise 0801...fog light...clouds clear...winds light...heading NNE...nearest visual contact bearing 351...smoke at approx 9000mts...visibility good enough too see smoke stacks...can see 22 smoke stacks

04/02/1040 0730...asked radio operator to send enemy convoy contact report with safe messaging...contact report sent...dropping back to approx 15000mts behind convoy and then proceeding to run parallel to the convoy at a wide angle until leading the convoy...approx time to do this manouvre is 5 hours...

04/02/1040 0820...radio message from BDU asking to now attack the convoy...lost sight of convoy in the haze...hydrophone check...convoy appears to have intercepted our radio report and is now changed course to north and fast speed...submarine now at flank speed on the surface trying to chase down convoy...

Not attacking...heading west to north west approches.

0828: Radio operator to the chief officer on the bridge:
"Sir, we have intercepted 3 radio messages from a german u-boat.
Possible position at zero eight one five hrs : N59°10' - E005°02', 160 natuical miles south west of us".
"... show me on the map where they are"
"Here, Sir".
"Show it to me" Radio operator hands out the radiograms.
"Were they encrypted?"
"Partially, Sir"
"Hhhmm... sounds like classified status messages"
The Chief officer reaches for the telephone receiver ...
