Just found SHIV going through my stuff for some early spring cleaning. I never got around to actually installing it before, but did this time around. Have been looking through forums and got updated to U-Boat missions. Wow, cool game, but wish that I would have started learning it a long time ago. Wondering if I should start modding it up, or play the stock first?

Don't waste your time with stock. Stock sucks!
Start with easier mods like TMOwtw, play auto targeting. Get a good feel first, it's gets much better.

It's ok to dabble with stock a while, but I would load up one of the super-mods before you get involved with a career. You will not be able to port a stock career into a modded game. Get JSGME if you don't already have it. Using JSGME to install mods will make your life easier. And yes, any of the super-mods will greatly improve the game.

Normally the advice is to play stock for awhile, since this will make you appreciate just how much of a difference the mods make. Since you are interested in the u-boats, I would say that unless you want to play u-boats in the Pacific in 1943 get Operation Monsun right away. It will let you run a full u-boat career from 1939, in any type u-boat you want.

Alright! Can't wait to stare at the horizon for a night!

Thanks for the advice, I'm going with the TMO first, and have dinked around with IL2 for years, so I am familiar with the JGSME. Of course, I think mostly that I got it all to work by accident before. Hopefully, my luck will continue.
