Hey there, I'm new here, and I was wondering if anyone knew fixes to a couple bugs.

See I used to play this game obsessively way back in the day, damn like 8 years ago now. (I feel old).

And while grabbing some files off an old work laptop I found that I still had the game CD and all. Lulz were had between me and a couple friends. Started playing it again a couple weeks ago.

Decided to be cool and load the game up on my new computer (win 7, core I5 processor and all that jazz). Patched it up to 1.4 off ubisoft's website.

And well, randomly there will be text missing. It doesnt happen on the old laptop. But for example, when at the realisim select screen, The "turn off weapons commander solution) on the bottom right isnt there. Also numerous messages that I should recieve from command end up blank (or when i ask the radioman to repeat them, he says theres nothing)

Tried messing around a lot. I thought perhaps due to the age of my installer CD and scratechs there mgiht have been problems copying the game over. Went and checked through the files though. I know the files there for the blanket messages that command is supposed to send you and their probability. For a test I set them all to 100% chance of being sent. Still nothing. And I can't get into the .tga files to check the other things.

Then I tried copying the install folder over from the old laptop... and it still doesnt work. But it works fine on the laptop itself. The hell, is it jsut a windows 7 hatred kinda thing?

The hell, is it jsut a windows 7 hatred kinda thing? The game's folder has to work together with the save folder (My) documents. So just swapping folders around isn't going to help. And what constitutes "messing around"? .. Sounds like self induced bugs if you ask me.

I suggest you re-install the game after cleaning every trace of SH3 on it. Including in the registry. And I suggest not to install it into the Program Files folder, if you must mess around in it later. ;)

The missing texts were happening before I started "messing around in the files"

But heres waht I've got so far. I've reinstalled the game 3 different times with the CD, each time it ends up with text missing (and with regards to ones that I know should be there, they're in the same places)

Copying over the documents folders only loads the save and the settings that I have. As far as the registry is concerned, well I can't copy that over, but I don't think that should have an effect of text not appearing. Either way I used a registry cleaner and supposedly got all of SH3 out. Reinstall, still has same problems.

Its not like it damages the gameplay at all. Its just text that I usually ignore. Also after playing for a little while just now, I noticed, sometimes whilest playing it will forget text it was already showing.

For example, you click navigator, and hit return to course. and he Always says following plotted course or something like that. Well he does... most of the time, every now and then though itll just have a timestamp, NA. and then no statement (though I did hear him say, "following course".

Edit.

Could always just rebuy the game. They have some pack on Steam with SH4+ expansion and SH5 (never played) that was released in 2008, so perhaps theres an update or so to help newer computers.

Try doing what Pisces has suggested first...cleaning the registry is vitally important.

Also it is important to not install it in the program files x86 folder where it wants to install itself. Windows 7 UAC will mess with the game by not allowing file changes and such. Install it in its own folder outside of program files.

What HW3 said. I reinstalled it to a desktop folder and patched, and it works fine now... The hell. :/\\!!
Gotta love modern operating systems

Perhaps the X86 stuff might also be the reason why Mechwarrior 4 and a couple of older games I have tweak out.

TY for the help though pple

You can try installing them like SH3, if they still do not run right, try running them in compatibility mode.
