A very clever helicopter pilot manages to rescue a deer stuck on the ice, by using the down-draft of the chopper to literally blow the animals out of danger.

That is simply awesome!

I've seen, or read about, helicopter pilots doing some amazing things over the years. This is one of them.

It looked injured and I had this vision of it running away free and proud into the sight of a hunter's rifle. Sorry, it's a curse of mine. I find it a wonder the animal didn't just die of fright during that ride.

That took some fairly good flying skills.

Honestly I think that most animals can sense when they are being helped.

I recall once while I was stationed in Germany we found a deer that had gotten tangled on and old perimeter fence on the base. This deer had been stuck for at least several hours and you could see that it was exhausted. This was in a secluded corner of the base so no one had noticed that the deer was stuck.

I discussed the situation with the person riding in the truck with me and we decided to try and get the deer free ourselves. We took out a pair of wire cutters and started clipping the lines and the deer just sat there I guess some how it knew that we where not going do any harm. When we cut him free he just sat there for a second and then bounded away.

Some fantastic piloting skills there, and a brilliant solution to the problem. Major kudos to the pilot. :salute:

^ This .. for every gallant man to rescue an animal there are thousands who kill them for fun, and ten thousands who don't care at all ..

Only if cooked properly.
My idea of a deer save is you hit with your pick-up truck, then pick it up, take it home, clean it, cook it, then eat it. :shucks:

I never much liked deer meat, cept the loin and ribs. I do mix deer hamburger about 50/50.

Myself, why some would consider that heroic, I think it was stupid risking your life and helo to save a deer.

^ proven, exactly what i said :smug:

At least you are honest :)

But save deer by a helicopter, or save one dolphin from a wire while killing thousands with nets, and then boasting about one save seems a bit hypocritic, no ?

No it does not it depends on the person. There are many sportsman that have respect for wildlife just because a person hunts for sport that alone does not make them some heartless jerk that has no respect for nature.

And they saved two deer not just one.

If you are so upset about thousands of dolphins dying every year why dont you do something about it? If you just sit and complain about something but do nothing about the issue then you look just as bad as the hypocrite if not worse.

I learned this when I took a large animal rescue class. Wild animals have been getting stuck on ice since they have been roaming the Earth and will continue to do so. We really shouldn't rescue the animal, let things happen naturally, even if it is brutal. So why do it? Because if someone who can do it safely doesn't, then some well meaning, yet misguided person or group will do it and get themselves into trouble. Thus lives will have to be risked to get some idiot out of trouble.

For the most part I agree, certainly with deer. Like Eastwood said,
"Buzzards got to eat same as worms"

Anyway, I see his act as risky and stupid to risk all that over a deer. If he would've wrecked and died I'm certain his family would've felt the same.
