View Full Version : A Scope Range Question

Running stock SH4 Gold (going to load mod just as soon as I get used to all the new knobs, switchs and pulls!). I remember in old SH2 you could switch between PPI and A scope to better define a target if the target was close inshore. Both modes gave a bearing. When switching to A scope in SH4 I can train the A scope using Home/End keys but when I get a contact I know the range but have no idea what the bearing is! Only way I can tell is to adjust the A scope station view so that I can concurrently watch the PPI and when the contact shows up on PPI I can get a rough estimation of bearing. Am I missing something? Is this issue "fixed" in a mod? Thanks!

Optical Targeting Correction (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=181172) has adjusted the stock radar to work as expected, both A-scope and PPI screens. In general, the stock radar wouldn't pick up contacts, even if it was in easy visual range half the time. The views were changed to allow for easy reading of the A-scope bearing/compass that's attached to the wall above the set. There's an extra zoom magnification to allow for easier reading the screen and dials. There's an accurate range "overlay" for both A-scope and PPI screens (the stock range measuring tool is not even close to being accurate on the A-scope, at any range setting).
Below is an image of the bearing/compass above the A-scope set, showing the magnified view:

Here's an image of the A-scope screen at the normal view. It's raised a bit to cover both the bearing/compass and screen.

Depending on the range setting, if the distance is set to the 4,000 yard mark, the contact spike is showing range at 3,000 yards. If it were set to the 32.000 yard distance, the contact is at the 24,000 yard range using the center range ruler. The range distances are 4,000, 32,000 and 60,000 yards.
To prove my point about the stock measurements being inaccurate, check the stock measurement ruler along the bottom of the screen (it's unfortunate, but we can't remove the thing!!). It shows the spike somewhere below the 3000 yard mark, maybe 2700, 2800 yards distance. Believe me, my test target is sitting where I put it.

The PPI screen uses the range settings of 8,000, 32,000, and 80,000 yards. The range for both the 8,000 and 80,000 distances are on the scale along the left side (just add the zero's). The 32,000 yard distance is indicated along the right side scale. As expected, the center of the sweep line indicates the direct bearing the contact is found. In the above case the bearing of the contact would be about the 11 degree mark, if the sweep line were properly positioned.
