Trying to decide on SH3 or SH4 as both are the same price. I read the reviews here and SH4 sounded very unfinished when it first came out. Are its biggest bugs fixed yet? Since SH3 is older, I assume it's more corrected.
If anyone has both, which do you prefer? Both theaters of war are fine; it's the gameplay. I'd go back to SH2 but I'm having graphics issues that apparantly are not going to be fixed unless I put my old video card back. So it's upward to 3 or 4.

Both games have their fair share of bugs and unfinished files. That is were the mods come into play. I do prefer the graphics of SH4 over SH3. I like SH5 even better. But, for each game, the mods make them great.
Follow link to the mods for each:

I would say go for 4 at this point. There seems to more and better mods for 4 than any other version. Thought I have to say I have never played 5.
As has been pointed out, 4 has better graphics than 3. At least to these weak and worn out eyes.

Welcome aboard to Subsim. :salute: You'll love it here.
I'm assigning you as special servant (cabin boy) to Sailor Steve, AVGWarhawk, Herr-Berbunch, Jimbuna, and any other moderators that I missed. And you're not allowed in the bilge yet.
I only have sh4 so I can't offer any comparison. I will tell you to make sure you get version 1.5. In the stores, it will be called Silent Hunter, Wolves of the Pacific, Gold. That is the most up to date version and the best mods are written for it. When you go to install it, put it in its own directory. Something about Vista and Win 7 (I don't know about Win 8) that messes with the activation of the mods. Check the stickies at the beginning, there is a lot of good information. Have fun, don't be afraid to ask questions, you'll have a lot. :know:

Looking at Amazon, Gold is $20, regular is $10. I'm guessing that adds the $10 U-boat Mission Expansion. Although for the same $20, they have SH5 Gold as well as Dangerous Waters ($15). I have an XP machine, so I think the problems of later OS's will not be an issue.

SH3 and 4 are patched and modded about as well as can be done.

Now I see one labeled two. Both come from the UK, although one says Ubisoft and the other CSDC. Getting confused, as they are different prices.

get the cheaper..
And for what its worth.. It all depends on your age and game experience..
Personally..
I'm 33, and played SH games from the beginning .. Shoot, I played Aces of the deep and Silent Service on my commodore 64 :)
I play games like Arma II and Cliffs of Dover that have fantastic graphics. If you are young and play games like that, even SH4 might be tough to get used to.
SH3, no way in the world as the graphics are... DATED
I saw you said you played SHII so I'm going to assume you will be ok with either.
Both are great games, SHIII-GWX gold, and some other mods though will always have a place in my heart..
I recently went back to it a month or so ago and it still captured my attention.
read my post a week ago

thats for SHIII and I still believe what I say..
I'm trying to find that feeling for SH4, I'm close, super super close but not yet there..
The mods are great but I think the difference is, Japan was never that good at sinking us (Americans)
In SHIII, its amazing to be 190 meters deep and still getting rained on by charges.. Going deeper and taking a chance because you have no other choice is a feeling I only got in that game..
SH4, is still way too easy, I've yet to be hit by charges, at least that badly.
Also the damage and crew maintenance in SHIII is amazing!! you really feel like you know your crew and need to place them in the best situations.
Maybe I don't know how SH4 works, but it seems everything is automatic and even when getting some damage, it almost doesn't matter where your guys are.
SH4 is still amazing though, I think the graphics IMO are better than SH5, which I went back to a couple months ago (gave up and went to SHIII and now I'm here with SHIV)
:)
IMO.. if you get SH4 now, it might be hard to go backwards and you would be missing out on the best SH series version of the game made.
But if you really don't care about graphics, then by all means go with either one..

Actually there are hundreds more mods for SH3 than for SH4, and many better ones, depending on what you're looking for. That said, SH4 is the better platform and if the u-boat side had SH3's mods I'd never play SH3 again. As it is I play both, wandering back and forth as to which I like better.
You'll like SH4. Despite the way I said it, they are both great games.

Thanks for all the advice. I also had a C-64 (and an Atari 800XL) and have emulators on my PC so I can play Carrier Force (my first game) and Strike Fleet.
