View Full Version : Russian city hit by meteorite
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-21468116
Apparently, a sizeable meteorite has just exploded over the city of Chelyabinsk.
Some story! I'm following this on Russian news myself, and there's certainly lots of interesting videos and images. Look here for example:
http://zyalt.livejournal.com/722930.html
Check out the shockwave from this thing
http://youtu.be/b0cRHsApzt8
http://youtu.be/w6uOzFo2MQg
Only light injuries and a lot of blown-out windows though. No pieces of the meteorite found yet. They say it most likely exploded about 50km above ground, and came from a fragment of an asteroid that was expected to pass 28,000km from earth today (as reported here earlier: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-21442863 ).

I bet that was an awesome sight in person. You know, minus the bang.
NASA already said that the meteor was not related with one of tomorrow. And some people began to speculate that it may be a missile:06::06::06:.
Oh well, tomorrow will be meteor day or something!
Hoooooooooolllyyyyyy
That....that was impressive, and quite terrifying to see, and that was just the shock wave from it exploding.
Lucky it wasn't another Tunguska, that would have been devastating.

I've seen a fair sized meteor pass through our atmo on a flat trajectory...
The friction makes them extremely bright.
Wasn't the Tunguska event caused by a large chunk of ice and not a space rock?

The last meteor shower was good, saw some big ones, but that was amazing. I have found 3 small pieces with my metal detector over the years, largest about size of golfball.

The "hit" part of the title might be a little misleading. I just read on another source that the blast was "several kilotons", which, if it had hit the city would have left no city at all.
I loved the nervous laughter in the videos. It's how we always react to sudden unexpected shocks. Thanks for posting the videos, George.

There are 28 confirmed impact craters in the United States, and another 30 in Canada. While all of them are quite old, that doesn't mean that we've never had any.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_impact_craters_in_North_America
The most famous is the Barringer crater in Arizona, which is almost a mile across.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meteor_Crater
The largest seems to be from the meteorite that created the shape of lower Chesapeake Bay, and is more than 50 miles across.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chesapeake_Bay_impact_crater
And of course there is the Chicxulub crater near the Yucatan Peninsula, almost 200 miles across, which is suspected of being responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicxulub_Crater
Most that fall are never noticed, they either land in the sea or in the wilderness and the impact craters since they are often only a few hundred meters across become eroded over time. Even more burn up before reaching the ground, or explode. This one was big enough, or dense enough, to explode and still have some pieces hit the deck. Ten tons is the estimated weight of it, no idea of the composition but given that it has been estimated by some (but take this with a pinch of salt) to be 'several' meters across I'd say that it was quite dense rock, perhaps even iron.
There's plenty of sightings of fireballs in the US, here's one from October last here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyFmM8s0H0c Chances are they're either dying satellites or a meteor. But when they reach the ground they're often so small that people don't notice them, occasionally some poor sod gets hit by them.

I'd wager that many of these cameras have separate HDs that can be hidden within the bowels of the car, making a quick grab hard to do, by which time you can (if not immobilized) drive off.

I saw some show(maybe the same one) about Tanguska the location is very remote so they can only get to it during the short summer months and can only go once a year.they showed video of the researchers covered by mosquitoes.
Anyway after the Soviets had tested some nuclear weapons they noticed that the blast pattern was very similar to the blast pattern that an air burst nuclear bomb generates. After discovering this many felt that the object must have exploded in the air.Of course there is a theory that the whole thing was caused by a massive methane gas pocket that somehow ignited.

This is the film that I was thinking of pretty interesting.I think the series "Nova" might have dedicated an episode to Tunguska as well.
It says a few minutes into the show that the first researcher did not get to the site until 1928! I guess that the remoteness and WWI and the Russian Civil War might have hindered things a bit.
It does make you think though what would have happened if in fact it was a large meteorite that exploded in the air(I think it was personally) had it have hit the surface in one solid piece what would have happened.
EDIT: You are right AVG another meteorite did hit the USSR in 1947 that one was a solid hit according to the film.

I haven't read many reports, but news reporting the sonic blast equaled an atomic bomb. I assume the blast was far enough from the city, but wondered what if it was over the city, what would the damage have been.
Its trajectory was pretty shallow, more horizontal. Wonder what would have happened if its course would have been more vertical, coming straight down over the city?

Their saying the energy was in the hundreds of kilotons when it blew ,so pretty much would have levelled a large part of the city if it stayed in one piece or most of it if it had broken up and shotgunned the place!
We should have seen this coming but there's hardly any money spent by any government to look for these things:nope:

Actually, in that case the pressure on the meteor would've been higher and it would have exploded even higher up in the atmosphere.

At least as I understand it there is a "watch" so to speak for such things thing is there are so many interstellar bodies that could possibly collide with at least the atmosphere its simply impossible to track them all.If you count from the smallest several thousand meteors enter our atmosphere every day most of them happen to be small.
At best they can manage to keep track of every "earth destroying" body thing is even if they can and do spot one that will hit earth there is nothing we could be able to do about it with our current technology. At best maybe make some sort of long term survival attempt.Of course they have to spot a threat first and space is pretty much endless in that great expanse it is very difficult to find even something that could destroy earth if it hit us.Best not to worry about it because there is truly nothing we can really do about it.

Size and mass has be revised up from earlier http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/asteroids/news/asteroid20130215.html
With rough calculations I'd wager that if it had hit ground then it could have made a crater between 1000-2000 ft in diameter and a depth of about 500 ft.
It could well have done so underneath the lake, I don't know what the depth of that lake is, nor the size of what hit it.
It's going to give scientists around the world a lot of data on impact events to work on, that's for sure, due to how well it's been documented. :yep:
