There are a few rumours circulating about a valentines day prank gone wrong but one fact is certain....a young woman is dead.
How tragic :nope:
South African Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has been arrested over the fatal shooting of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his home, local media say.
Police said they have charged a 26-year-old man with murder, but did not confirm it was Mr Pistorius.
The precise circumstances surrounding the incident are unclear. Reports say he may have mistaken her for a burglar.

Says who... you?

As Jimbuna said, this is tragic. Not sure of the facts, but I have seen this guys story on TV several times. I hope it was an accident, even a bad one, only time will tell.

Let's not use this as an opportunity to show bad taste.

Rgr that...just updated on BBC but I'm still not convinced he is innocent so it should be interesting to see both sides legal arguments unfold.

Oscar Pistorius has been granted bail by magistrate Desmond Nair.

Don't look good for Oscar.
I mean he allegedly shot her through the bathroom door, but they found shell casings in the bathroom...
Maybe they fell on his feet and when he walked in ,they got in there, oh wait...
Old spatula feet would be in trouble here, but there, will be let off because it is all they have to hold up to the world as a hero athlete.

Judgement is due on Thursday. The prosecutor in my opinion did one hell of a good job in tying this up.
Wonder how much work is going to get done in SA what with everyone watching the judge with baited breath come the hour.
Judgement day and it looks like the murder charge is off the table: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-09-11/live3a-verdict-delivered-in-oscar-pistorius-murder-trial/5737406
Sounds like it will be culpable homocide.

To be honest, I always thought the premeditated murder charge would be a tough sell.
I wish that South Africa had our version of Second Degree Murder as I think it was a heat of the moment homicide.
He will probably be convicted of the Culpable Homicide charge. Of course he could get convicted and serve no time in prison depending on the judge.

Common law murder. Acquitted.

He's now looking at a maximum of 15 years but possibly reduced to 7-10.
Best case scenario could be house arrest but having recently sold his three South African properties means he would be living at his uncles house.
My gut instinct is that he planned to leave South Africa if he was found not guilty.

Yes, I do agree. The premed was a bit of stretch but to escape the murder rap is not going down too well by analysts here. And now the judge has extended his bail even though he has sold all his immovable assets.
I think a tweet I read about sums up the general feeling here in SA:
"The Steenkamps (Reeva's family) can be thankful that the judge did not order them to replace Oscar's bathroom door!!!!!
Sentencing is set for 13 Oct. If the judge gives him a jail term the max under culpable homicide is 15 years. She could place him under house arrest for a period or fine him.
Anyone of the last two would be deja vu Simpson.

For anyone wondering what "culpable homicide" means, it's when you're famous and can buy your way out of a murder charge.
