Couldn't stand the original -- Shatner seems to have studied at the HoneyBaked school of acting; he ate so much scenery, it's a miracle he didn't die of indigestion. I like the later TV series and I am particularly fond of Deep Space Nine...

I agree. Shatner had a lot to be desired. He only looked good because he was surrounded by good actors.

I thought they all were pretty mediocre. Certainly not top 5 scifi material as most
lists rank Wrath of Khan. So, very, illogical all of the movies.

The original, Shatner and them. The little I think of ST, I prefer Shatner. Sir Patrick Stewart just isnt IMHO a very good actor. Tho, the Generations cast does have Ryker and the chick he marries.. but then again, the old cast
has Uhura. :O:

I was a bit shocked to see how short the skirts were. :)
Gene Roddenberry was well-known in Hollywood as an admirer of the female form, in particular, their legs. When the original series was concieved, he made a point of making the feamle uniforms particularly fetching...
Oddly, when The Next Generation was launched, short, leg revealing skirts were in the first one or two episodes and then later scrapped in favor of a sort of jump/pant-suit uniform. It may have had sometihng to do with the female cast members (particularly Marina Sirtis [Deanna Troi]) calling the shorter uniforms the "cheerleaders in space" look...
For those of you not familiar with Uhura, enjoy:

DS9 did have trouble in its first couple of season too, but found its feet with the Dominion...and Voyager...well...

Indeed. I dont mind the show itself, like I said, it seems pretty OK. What I do mind is
the "Oh, it's Star Trek, so it's automatically great!" stuff what most fans of the show
seem to be all about. Few months back I tried to find Scifi movies that I hadn't
seen, so I browsed through two dozen top 10/top 5 lists and Wrath of Khan was
in majority of them, in Top 5. There are so many Scifi movies that would
deserve a place in the top 5, that are better than WoK, but nostalgia seems to
take first place. :hmmm:

So Star Trek has become the subject of debate again. I guess I have to say something as well.
Confirming that Star Trek is the second stupidest thing that I have ever seen.
Star Trek was a product of its time. Shows like Rawhide and particularly Wagon Train were among the favorites of the period, and ST was designed to follow that pattern. At the time Trek was considered revolutionary. As for the acting, I think the real reason William Shatner gets so much flak is that people today have forty years of comedians making fun of him. Watch something like The Outrage, and he's fine. I recently rewatched the original series, and he's fine. Of course I watched it when it first aired, and I was sixteen at the time, and it was, as I said earlier, revolutionary.
Not long ago I watched Boston Legal, and he's not only fine, he's great.
Next Generation: I thought they tried to hard to make a better Trek and ended up trying even harder, and the harder they tried the worse it got. The only episode I ever enjoyed was the last show of season 1, with the Star Fleet bigwigs taken over by the alien bugs. Other than that, where the original series had truly great episodes, and some truly awful ones, Next Generation managed to have consistently mediocre shows.
Deep Space Nine: More of the same. I couldn't watch past the first season. I've been told that later on they got a lot better, but by then I could no longer bring myself to watch it.

Now, see, I havent followed Shatner. I have seen 3-4 Boston Legal eps and
I did like him in that. I've seen the ST movies (not the latest lens flare fest),
and thought he was a tad old.
I dont remember what I was saying, but it was something important as usual!
EDIT: Oh right, when did Shatner get old calculated in ST seasons?
Oh, Steve, if you only know what a reputation Ol' Bill has in Hollywood you would know it is not mere hate. Let's just put it this way: When Shatner is acting, he's not really acting. Many years ago, the powers that be controlling the Trek franchise made a deliberate decision to sideline Shatner as a liability to the contiued life of Trek. This is why most, if not all, of the other ST:TOS stars have been in Trek projects and Shatner has not...
Way back in the late 60s, I was walking around outside the old Desilu Studios (now part of Paramount Studios) where ST:TOS was filmed. On the wall right net to one of the entrances, fans had written grafitti about the series ("I Grok Spock", "I Love Scotty", etc.). There was one entry, written in large, bold letters: "Dump Shatner!". To this day I wonder which memeber of the cast worte it....

No we evolved into the correct spelling leaving you old fashioned monarchists behind. For example there is no U in the word color. :yep: :)

We also spelled "spelt" wrong. So there.
When I was in the Navy they explained to us that the British drive on the left side of the road because in days of old when swords were the main weapon it was a good idea to have a potential opponent on your right in case things got nasty.
We were also told that Americans drive on the right specifically because the Brits drive on the left.

You can see the dilemma regarding mounted battle strategies and traffic flow by not adopting a standard. I don't think the British still fight sword battles while driving. Or do they?:03:

The OP was apparently upset by something the pres said on TV - was the president lying?
Q. How can you tell if a politician is lying?
A. His mouth is open.
Like the old journalism thumbrule, "Dog bites man is not news, man bites dog IS news". When a politician tells the unvarnished truth or comes up with a practical solution for a real problem that would be news, otherwise it's BS as usual.
