Bit of a surprise, but given all that's happened while he's in office he'll probably be glad to see the back of the gilded chair.

Still, he'll have more time to work on the Death Star now. :yep:

I was excommunicated once. Then I sacked Rome, took the Pope out of his palace and forced him and all his successors to live in Northern Sweden. I considered that a satisfactory way to get revenge.

Actually, his tenure has seen him actively working hard to clean up the church and its mess. While regional church leaders were trying to hush things up, he was working to do things like remove the statute of limitations for such crimes, including in canon law that such things against anyone under 18 would be a crime for a priest, etc. He has worked hard to see that bad priests can get tossed easier.

I am not catholic - and I have great issues with the theology. So the guy looks like palpatine. He has worked for good - and I respect him for that.

Really?

While regional church leaders were trying to hush things up
Regional church leaders????
Thats his old job isn't it, a regional church leader in Germany during the time when regional church leaders in Germany were hushing up their long running kiddie fiddling habits.

But its OK he had a redeeming job in the interim between being top dog and regional husher upper, it involved going to different countries to work on hushing up the local child abuse scandals with the local regional leaders.

Yes, actually I would expect something else. There are lots of bad lawyers. There are lots of lawyers that act in ways that are completely unscrupulous. However, only a fool would assume that the next lawyer that will walk into the room will be unscrupulous based on what was previously stated. After all, I have no idea who that lawyer is and what he has done.

So, yes, wait until you see who it is, then mock as you see fit. Otherwise, what is to seperate you from the chronic polemic. Besides, you wouldn't want us thinking that you were also that sort of idealogue, would you?

And for the record, many of America's best presidents were also religious. The two are not mutually exclusive. Come on indeed.

Can you give some examples? :hmm2:

Many of the founding fathers ascribed to either conventional Christianity or the Deist philosophy, or a combination of both, as in both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

John Quincy Adams was a Unitarian and vice president of the American Bible Society.

Abraham Lincoln attended the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church.

Teddy Roosevelt was an outspoken member of the Dutch Reformed Church.

Woodrow Wilson was the son of a Presbyterian minister and served as president of the Presbyterian-owned Princeton University.

Dwight David Eisenhower was the only president to undergo full baptism and conversion (the Presbyterian Church, again) in US history. He also pushed for the addition of the words 'Under God' in the US Pledge of Allegiance.

John F. Kennedy was a practicing Roman Catholic.

So where do you think the next pope will come from

Europe... again
Africa
South America?

Takeda Shingen

So where do you think the next pope will come from

Europe... again
Africa
South America?

Europe--Still the most likely. The continent may not be the future for the Church, but it is still where most of it's political power is concentrated.

North America--No way. The Church has long looked down it's nose at the North American clergy, and the way that the US Church has allowed civil abuse prosecutions to proceed relatively unhindered has not warmed that relationship.

Asia--The Roman Catholic Church has only a shadow of a presence in Asia.

Africa--Possibly. It would still be considered a radical move, but the Church's future is in Africa. If there is a possiblity to win converts, count the Church in.

South America--Not a chance. The South American clergy still carry the stigma of their association with the liberation theology movement, and carry absolutely no political weight within the Church.

Platapus
02-11-13, 07:46 PM

Within hours of Pope Benedict announcing his resignation, lightning struck St Peter's Basilica.

So now we know about how long it takes for a message from Earth to reach God in Heaven. Pretty sloppy service, I must say. He should consider investing in improving his call center.

I think it is time for an Irish pope or even a North American/Irish decent pope.

With almost one billion men and women belonging to the Catholic movement they have a big group of people to please,
half of the Catholics are reported to be in South America, but I doubt if they will elect a spanish pope nor one from Africa.

I have prayed for the Catholic church for years to stop the worshiping of Mary and kneeling down to statues till one day
the Lord spoke to my heart and said,

"Pray for the Catholic church to stop thinking that they are the only church going to heaven".

which is exactly what they believe even though the name catholic stands for universal they still think they are the blessed church
of Gods only choice.

book published last year entitled “Petrus Romanus: The Final Pope Is Here,” by authors Cris Putnam and Tom Horn, detailed the Malachy prophecy and predicted that the current Pope would abdicate for health reasons, paving the way for the final Pope

Ancient Catholic prophecies by a revered Irish bishop St. Malachy end with the chilling prediction that the next Pope to be selected by the College of Cardinals to fill Benedict XVI’s place will be the last Pope.

St. Malachy described only one more Pope after Benedict, “Petrus Romanus” or “Peter the Roman.”

The Irish prophet wrote: “In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church, there will reign Peter the Roman, who will feed his flock amid many tribulations; after which the seven-hilled city (Rome) will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people.”
