Goin back to base with no torpedoes on board ,came across a small convoy , I managed to sink a C2 and a C3 with gunfire as luck had it I had just enough ammo . Question :- is there a way of knowing how much Ammo you,re carrying without goin to th deckguns or without surfacing first ? I,m sure some of you old Sea dogs can tell me . Cheers Hardigan :arrgh!:

Click on weapons officer. Bring up weapons management. This will show your torpedo status. Top right corner is an icon, three shells. Click for deck gun and AA gun ammo status. The watch officer will also do this but you have to be on surface.

THX Skippers, used up all the HE if anything else hoves into sight I,ll be usin armour piercing , Good Hunting to you H:up:
Follow-on question about HE vs. AP ammo, etc. When attacking a surface target, is there really any difference (in SH3) in their effects? When I'm not trying to maintain a hand's breadth between my keel and the sea bottom, I'm often found on the battlefields in World of Tanks (and now their spin-off, World of Warplanes). At least in Tanks, there are huge differences in armor penetration, explosive radius, and damage points between the different projectile points.
Sorry to have to ask what is probably a lame question, especially after being in SH3 for ..... 8 years now. <sigh> I'm a perpetual n00b, same as in Eve.
But thanks to all, and MANY thanks to the folks who are sufficiently computer literate to keep cranking out such great gameplay mods.
So mote it be.

Might be my imagination, but it seems like on a merchant with a very thin hull plating (compared to say, the armor on a destroyer), the AP ammo just does not do the job..... With the HE shells, you can light a tanker, or a small merchant up with a few rounds, and BOOOOM! they are exploding. But using the AP on a tanker, it seems like the damage is not as great. Maybe it is just my imagination, maybe not.
In the real world there is something called over match. If the shell diameter (caliber) over matches the armor it is trying to pen, it will pass through, and there is a possibility that shell will not explode. This happened from time to time with the 88mm L/56 found on the Tiger I when fired at the Stuart tank. The Stuart has a max armor of 2 inches in the front, the Tiger fires a 3.5" shell. Fails to detonate, but still will kill crew and cripple the tank. This also happened in Bismarck's torpedo bulges during her fight with the HMS. Hood. Shells from the Prince of Whales penned the bulges, but failed to detonate. Could have been faulty fuses, could have been due to the thin steel of the blister. So, with thin lightly armored ships (or tanks) HE is your best bet. It will explode on contact, blast the skin of the ship (or tank) wide open and kill/damage anything behind the skin of the ship. Historically U-boats did not carry AP ammo, or Star Shells. Only HE since the deck gun was to only be used against merchants.
