View Full Version : Seriously.. how do you get away??

Its early in the war, late 1940, Dec I think.

I spot what I thought was a typical destroyer force, until I saw the two middle ships.. A carrier and small capital ship.

3 perfect shots into the carrier and 1 lucky stern shot into the front of the capital ship. I thought for sure the capital was going to take more eels, but sure enough, once her engines started back up and she went full power, she dove into the water like a submarine.

The carrier on the other hand.. was sitting still, I used it for cover as I sat right along side until my men could get the fish loaded back up.

By then, not realizing she was slipping into the water like an angry dirty mechanic and smashed me as I was sitting 30 meters deep.

35% hull and some other minor damages.

Great.. Time to go, good job right?

no.. Im time compressed 512 and 1 knot, and I have.. no lie....

57 ships above me.. WTF!!

A little over kill?? Including in that pack? 3 other capital ships, I know they are mad, but I've loaded this saved game now 10x and no matter what I do, I cannot escape..

damn

If you are using IRAI as a mod then i am afraid the old days of just firing at anything doesnt work anymore . If you have TDW patcher enabled then try to call in a wolf pack . Read this. You can hear thru the hydrophone yourself when you are being triagulated . It is a distinct sound .

You could just disable IRAI, from my experience, having all the destroyers in the British isles attacking you at once (It was 1939 so French destroyers as well) they never let up, but after disabling IRAI after about 3 hours they abandoned the chase and scattered because I sank the Carrier they were defending and I am not sure where they headed to, but they took of in a hurry.

Maybe there needs to be an IRAI version with less persistent destroyers and less response from nearby destroyers coming to find you.

ok.. say I like the difficulty setting the way they are..

How in the world does anyone escape ??

I don't see it being possible, so why even have those settings?

just curious

I would like to know also! Didn't know that this can happen with IRAI. Hardly realistic having over 50 warships hunting down one submarine, no matter what this submarine sunk, let alone in 1940... But yes, how do you escape without turning IRAI off?

Almost lay down on bottom sea or as deep as possible, all stopped, and wait ...they leave after 30 mn :-?
If they drop right on top, move a bit to avoid the charges.
It worked twice for me so far, with stock latest IRAI.
Took some damages though, but survived.

I don't think it's very realistic in my opinion, furthermore at the war begining.
I added the TDW Depth Charge Water Disturbances, but result was the same and DD always knew where i was...

I have been trying to get away from my 'previous experience' which proved again, unsuccessful.
I was only able to escape by disabling IRAI, I have not bothered to re-enable it.

That works. And... if they're just about overhead, go to extreme speed and make a hard 90° turn. Then shutdown your engines and coast. That should put you out of harms way for a bit. The deeper you are the better off you'll be. Good luck. :salute:

That's good to know
I'm gonna try with reducing a bit SONAR_DIFFICULTY_MAX firstly.

As said above, in IRAI i have reduced SONAR_DIFFICULTY_MAX = 0.85;

Result seems a lot better...meaning destroyers are still very dangerous, but now i have a little chance to escape IF manoeuvring correctly, and if i give them my thinner profile as often as possible :D

Not 100% safe though!...but better accuracy IMO.

(BTW, was testing this with FX Update test mission, and the 2 destroyers are damaging each other when launching depth charges!)

What about instaed of changing the min and max values .
Change Silent Hunter 5\data\Cfg\Sim
[Hydrophone]
Waves factor=1.0;0.75 ;[>=0]

I've also seen this while running a series of tests with the FX test mission and recording my results. In every test, both destroyers either damaged themselves or damaged each other; one DD even sank himself. Unfortunately, their ability to pursue and depth charge seems to be seriously affected by incurring damage.

The other issue I've noticed is that DDs only appear to depth charge a known contact. That is, they always damaged me when they knew where I was (I was running at flank while submerged to test their behavior), but they gave up when I didn’t make any noise. This isn’t really a bad thing. It mimics “playing dead” on the bottom, but perhaps the DDs should use their ASDIC intensively on the last known position and, whether or not they detect anything, drop a bunch of depth charges on that position, just to be safe.

This would make it more difficult to simply go to all stop and wait half an hour, which seems to be the most effective tactic right now. Paradoxically, it might also improve our ability to get away from destroyers by drawing them to the point of last contact, even while the U-boat is creeping away at ahead slow and silent running.

Well actually in career they did it :03:
Was all stopped and they kept on dropping few times.

Also, i never saw them damaging each other in career. Just in FX mission...

Changing the IRAI difficulty, you can at least move silent very slow trying to escape. I've reduced them quite a lot (hydro and sonar value mini 0.25 and maxi 0.55) and they are still trying to spot you.
Not that easy to find the right value without cheating :D

That's good to hear. I will have to test more thoroughly in career mode. The problem is that I play DiD, so testing is a bit riskier there... :o

I've just raised a bit my previous IRAI difficulty settings.
Hydro and sonar on mini=40 and maxi=60 now.
Because last convoy attacked was too easy :)
(maybe a difference between task forces destroyers and convoy destroyers detection accuracy, i dunno)
