Could someone please explain to me how the upgrades system works. I'm playing RFB + RSRD. It's May'44. I'm trying to complete the war in a Tambor class sub. So far I've passed up two offers of newer classes of boats. The thing is, at this stage of the war, I should have a fairly full Conningtower Fairwater modification. Instead, I still have the first early war mod. I've read a few posts on the issue, and looked at the player/unit files, and according to the dates, I should have the late war config. I think I read somewhere that your performance during patrols is a factor as well?

Nobody? Just returned to port after a successful patrol in the La Perouse St. area. It is now July'44, and still no CT upgrade available. This is not historically correct. At this point in time I should have a fully cut down conning tower profile.

Been so long, it may be a RFB issue, I know I got my upgrades with TMO after a few rejections of a new boat. I planned to use the Tambor through the entire war as well, strange, I refused a third offer of a new boat after a great patrol and got retired instead.

I can't give you any detailed help, but my understanding of the way the game handles upgrades is this: If you do very well, you are offered a new boat, but if you turn it down there is no upgrade substitution offered. If you do less well, you may be offered an upgrade. So, game is coded to offer new commands in preference to upgrades, and AFAIK, nobody can change this.

OK, I came across this post by Ducimus: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=134913&highlight=conning+tower+upgrade

Like I remember, your performance does play a role. I'm wondering if lowering the earned reknown needed for a successful patrol will get you an upgrade, but not screw anything else up. Lets face it, in reality Fleet Boats were not offered upgrades as a result of captain's performance. This notion of points is arcadish IMO. When modifications were proven to be benificial, they were incorporated as time allowed, more sooner than later. New construction had them incorporated into their design. I won't feel like I'm a cheater if I lower the points to get my overdue historical upgrade. The only thing I want to know is if it could be done without messing something else up? RFB+RSRD used by the way. Thanks.

OK, I skimmed the post.

My hasty reading suggests the way to get the upgrades would be to change the "end of life" date. Lowering the renown value may just get you the offer of a new command. I could be wrong, though.

Agreed. From what I've read, major overhauls were scheduled more on the basis of how much damage/wear the boat had. I very much doubt that a boat, in good condition, would be taken out of service, just to get the latest style tower. On the other hand, if you had to send one back to Mare Is. anyway, why wouldn't you give it the latest equipment available?
