View Full Version : To sink or not to sink?

Hi guys. I'm playing OHII career, north of Ireland Dec. 1939 and apparently found a small convoy in heavy fog.
I sank the first of the 2 destroyers escort wasting 2 precious fishes (bow and stern) to do this and the escorted convoy pop out of the fog as a luscious HOSPITAL SHIP with a unmistakable red cross painted sporting the Union Jack high above.
Call me insanely evil :arrgh!: but besides morality issues, that I do not care much, if I sink her will I lose or gain renown? After all if no uboot shall hit her, why the need of 2 destroyers as escort? :k_confused:
When I was a kid and played videogame in the 80es there was a game with a bazooka and if you hit the pixel of what resembled a truck with a red cross it was really bed for your score. Rules may have changed in 30 years...
Game is paused, data in TDC input, the destroyer far behind, the red cross centered in my periscope... shall I empty a couple of tubes or send my apologies to the second destroyer and sneak away?
BTW, since it's my first post after 2-3 years and the last was with SH4, I would like to thank TDW, Sober, Trevally and all others that contributed to mod and made this game fantastic from the unplayble creep it was when I bought it in 2010. After 3 years and a new hardware I came back to the forum with the hope that my brand new videocard would immensely improve SH4 and I found instead a completely different SH5, so I resurrected my dvd!
Chapeu guys! ...you made my days :Kaleun_Applaud:

You're insanely evil.
Well, you said...:D
But no. My guess is that the game puts ships together with escorts at random, and if you sink the hospital ship you will indeed lose renown big time.

I would surface and run full speed to close with the hospital ship to see if you take small arms fire... try to keep the hospital ship between you and the other destroyer if you can. This way if you start taking fire from the hospital ship you can dump 2-3 fish from 500-800m and then crash dive before the destroyer catches up. This way you won't have any morality issues...
BTW, a cross painted on there is supposed to mean it's protected, but at the same time the Geneva conventions weren't until after WWII... ;)

Thank you Sailor Steve (I believe my soul deserve a punishment, but I hope only in this game) & JPeck96272: a good cutting edge moral dilemma solution (to target).
On the contrary of my habit, since the issue is controversial since SH3 times (see http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=162532&page=2), for knowledge sake of the forum all, I decided to save the game before pushing the :Kaleun_Los: button, sink her easily from 500m and end the patrol back home to check the developments of my renown to render everybody account.
Meanwhile the 2nd destroyer (A Class) arrived and after searching me a while in the wrong area stopped near the relict of sinking hospital (12038 tons worthy) - maybe to rescue the survivor nurses? - so I took the freedom to torpedo her too during this pious action... :haha:
Now I regret this further evil action of mine ... it will complicate my renown accountings :har:
Anybody knows which is the renown assigned for the A Class sunk?
I should balance it off from the total amount once in the bunker to calculate precisely the hospital penalty/award.
You're insanely evil.

Since your hospital ship was sailing under the British red ensign, I am sure it was a valid target... gamewise.
I will leave any further consideration up to your moral sense... supposed that you got any http://stratics.com/community/data/images/smilies/DevilSmiley.gif :O:

Ill let you decide what to do, hopefully their is some kind of empathy inside you.
All of those sick, injured people, just so defenseless, and you want to send them to the bottom and there is nothing they can do about it?
All those doctors who were most likely conscripted into this war will have their knowledge wasted.
:nope:
:gulp:
All the injured people will be defenseless fish food.

There is no sick or injured people, its just zeros and ones
:)
You are not alone Al. I did the same thing on my last last North Western Approaches mission. I caught mine all by it's lonesome heading West at 8°67'W-55°43'N.... 12164 tons.

so it all started... :03:
Nazi-Fascists were the "ones", and all the rest was worth a "zero", so they thought in their foolishness :-?

It's only a waste if he was using IRAI. If not, they were stupid people :D

I sank one in the same area around the same time actually and I've never regretted anything in game any more in my life...
I only did it to raise morale and because I was bored as it was the first ship I'd seen in a long month of fruitless searching North and South between the Western Isles and North Ireland with stops every two hours to search the hydrophone. Man was I bored with that - so as soon as I found a contact I just said "I'm sinking this - I don't care what flag its flying".:arrgh!:
Don't do it. I promise you the looks your crew will give you (not to mention the court martial when you get home) will make you regret it.
EDIT:
Yeh it looked just like Trevally's picture btw!!! Pretty fireworks!

So Gentlemen, I am back in comfort of Wilhelmshaven, where I checked my renown. :salute:
Since renown was not an issue when I left the dock I do not have precise memory of it, but surely was from 15200 to 15700.
The current renown from the patrol, sinking only:
1 Hospital ship + 1 A Class destroyer + 1 V&W destroyer = 16720. :yeah:
I trust the destroyers are not worthy such a renown increase, let alone that for sure there was no penalty, just my condolences ( the image of those young innocent nurses is still haunting me every night :Kaleun_Crying: - being anyway less sympathetic with the doctors - my evil side wins) for the sinking of the Hospital Ship.
For Science's sake I'd like also to add that the morale of the crew was not in any manner affected by the knowledge of having caused the loss of an unarmed hostile hospital ship and her passengers lives, not even after emerging and seeing her slowly sink while burning between the two funnels. The crew was staring at the very same scene portrayed in Trevally's awesome picture - even colors were white with some green stripes and that cross, as red as the bloodstained hands Macbeth could not wash away...
This given, I do not encourage anybody to the same evil deeds of mine, but the Renown mechanism and the gameplay itself do so.
Faithfully

They were dying anyway http://imageshack.us/a/img7/7135/beingsick.gifhttp://imageshack.us/a/img11/8274/blackeyex.gif probably from cancer or something worse and in these days anesthetics were rare and non efficient so you saved them from terrible long death and suffering. It is best from now to sink all hospital ships, after all it is a good deed :sunny::smug:
