Yep the ''Vierdaagse'' is a four day march of Nijmegen.
The largest marching event in the world where people march about 40 - 50 km a day.

If August entered as military participant he had to walk at least 40km a day with 10kg of gear on him iirc

Only since 1813, before that the Netherlands were first a part of the Holy Roman Empire, then as part of the Seventeen Provinces (which included Belgium, Luxembourg and parts of modern day France and Germany) which themselves were an semi-autonomous part of the Spanish Empire, which then fought a war for independence from Spain (The Eighty Years war) and achieved it.
Between 1648 and 1785 the United Provinces became a major European and world power, settling colonies all over the place, including America (New Amsterdam which became New York after we swapped it for some islands in the East Indies) and Asia. They were a thriving merchant republic, establishing some of the first stock markets and economic practices that are in use today including the first recording economic 'bubble'

Then came the American revolution, inspired by it several groups rose up in Holland wanting a more democratic nation, the Head of State used British and Prussian forces to try and put down the uprisings, which were eventually dissolved after a confused and bloody period...however next door in France the ruling elite were not so lucky and the French revolution took place, seeing their 'Dutch brothers' being slaughtered in the name of the revolution the French brought an army up and invaded the United Provinces, dissolving the Dutch government and making it a de facto puppet of France known as the 'Batavian Republic', which lasted until the era of Napoleon who turned it into a monarchy, and gave it to his brother to rule, his brother promptly betrayed him so Napoleon just put the whole thing back into the French empire until his defeat at the hands of the 'Great Powers' who then decided to reshape the Netherlands into its current form and elevate the exiled republican leader to a monarch, and thus the Dutch monarchy and the United Kingdom of the Netherlands was born.

Then, of course, the whole Belgium thing happened, which I don't think Holland has really gotten over to this day. :haha:

A German article hit the nail on top when comparing Beatrix and Elizabeth II. Could anyone imagine that Elizabeth could just quit, like you quit just any job? I could not, it just does not match what I perceive as her attitude and principle understanding of her "post". Obviously there also is a difference in the way the British mount their monarchy on public events, namely funerals and marriages, but also yearly ceremonial events. I think they do right in that, even if maybe it costs a a bit more that way - compared to so many other ways of wasting money by the state and the government, that are peanuts. The emotional payback and identification function for the people is so much more precious. Even more money gets wasted if you have an emotionless, sober, totally manager-style and pragmatic "president" like in Germany, of whom not few people, me included, are asking, why we even have this office that costs money but whose identification value to the people is almost zero - he is just a clerk not being called that. I would never bow to a Western king or queen, those historic days are simply over, but nevertheless I can meet the institution and its function with sympathy and- depending on the person's record - with respect. Consider it a question of "working morale".

Just when I get the impression that a "queen/king" maybe thinks her/his job is indeed just this: a job that can be picked up and be quit like any other, I have a problem with that. It is not a "Beruf". It is a "Berufung". If one does not understand that, one should never accept the call. Seen that way, I have much respect for Elizabeth II, on this specific detail.
