My girl friend is a flea market nut, and it's been a while since she has gone to one. So, I surprised her yesterday by taking her to one, you know, to earn points. :D

While wondering through the endless number of rows, thinking that my feet could not hurt any worse, i came across a massive library of used books. :hmmm: So, i started browsing, and BINGO! I let out a small high pitched yelp, but she was no where to be found. Turns out, she had walked through the next row before realizing that I was gone, and she'd been talking to me the whole time. :har:

I stacked up on about eight new additions for my personal collection, but these three i felt were the best find. Got the three for $14.

My dad has a 1948 US Navy Bluejacket's manual in one of our bookshelves...I flipped through it and it was pretty interesting. I also have some old West Point Textbooks on WW1 and 2 that I got from a family member. I haven't flipped through those much...but antique stores and flea markets are some good places to find books.

Wish we had good flea markets in my area. The prices here are horrible.

A great place to go for older books especially old military history books and old military manuals is a used book store. You might have to look around to find a good one but they are a great source for older books.Usually the prices are fairly reasonable and based on condition.

One of my favorite used book store find is a multi volume series of books about WWII covering the entire war.The title of my set is "Pictorial History of the Second World War" printed by WM. H. Wise & CO. I have seen similar sets published by different publishers(not sure if they are generally the same or not though).

I paid $45.00 for my set which is not bad for books published from 1944~1945 6 books in total.

You should always be on the look out for older books published by the Naval Institute Press because they typically only print a single run of a book and only reprint if demand is high enough.

Two good examples are "The Fleet Submarine in the US Navy"(only one run ever printed back in 1979) and "Japanese Aircraft of the Pacific War".(has had a few reprints but last one was in 1995)

Good find.

At one point, I swear I saw a book by Donitz (sorry no umlaut) or Raeder in an "Anitque," store which is where I generally find my goods nowadays.

1. I kick myself to this day for not buying that book. Seriously.
2. The older stuff is not getting reprints unless they are something seminal (sp? - looks dirty if I spelled it right); Run Silent, Run Deep no prob in finding it, I'd say. Memoirs of a Tibetan Submarine Captain will never see light after its first printing.

Other coolest book I've come across is a 1940-50ish Airman's Handbook, but I digress.

Buy the stuff if/when you find it as you may never see 'em again. Unless Subsim starts up a Library or something...

p.s. Fistbump on the flea market thing - my wife is a fantastic study and fan of antiques and our whole house is a flaming museum to a degree and she loves flea markets. She ain't keen on firearms (milsurp is my bag and hey, they're history right?) so I'm borked in that department and I loathe walking the aisles but one must show support to the spouses for obvious reasons.

I would agree with that if you see an older book that looks interesting you should go ahead and buy it.Out of print books can go for a mint because sellers know that they are rare.

"The Fleet Submarine in the US Navy" for example I have seen that for sale on Amazon for $80.00 at the cheapest the last time I looked.I got a copy from an Amazon seller back in 2009 for much less around $40.00 or so and it was in fairly
good shape they undercharged for most likely not realizing that the book is rare their loss my gain.

I prefer to buy older books in person though in order to be able to judge the condition of the book before any money changes hands.I will use Amazon for an older book only if I cant find it by other means.

Not to derail too much, but do we have a clearinghouse of "good finds," around here?

The older/wiser/drunker/balder I get, the more I'd like to see like minded people get what I can't for the seeming posterity if anything else.

Not specifically no.What do mean though a thread to show off what you got or a thread to offer what you have for sale.

I like the idea of showing what you got but more if it relates to cool finds at places like flea markets and used books stores, parts swap meets that stuff is cool to see I do not really want to to see what someone just picked up at Wally World with no effort.

Nah. I'm just wondering if there is a "hey - there's some cool crap here; I can't buy it, but I think some of you dudes might like it," sort of thread somewhere.

I'd like to see the things that "we," (i.e. you bunch of sods out there as it seems we all have similar interests) may enjoy be enjoyed by those who appreciate such things rather than see them tacked up on a wall in a Cracker Barrel [a U.S. eatery chain that puts all the old crap it can find on a wall or hanging from a ceiling - usually by big, honking screws and damn the consequences sort of approach].

No bragging about "big scores," or anything - I just want to see good things saved and passed on by the efforts of me or others to those who could care for such things.

Yeah, i read a little bit of it tonight before work, and I'm already HOOK! :yep:

Thanks! Yeah, mine LOVES old country homes type stuff. Of course, as she buys more & more, i'm noticing my attic is filling up.

Man i would love it if i could find me a good copy of "The Fleet Submarine in the US Navy" for a great price. :yep:

I have book that my dad gave me years ago, "Fighting Ships of WWII" (I'm pretty sure that's right), which i want to go back and read (haven't look at it since I was a kid) because it has a section on U-47. I was tired, but i thought i read tonight that Reinhard 'Teddy' Suhren served on the U-47 as watch officer before getting his own command, the U-564. :hmmm:

Sad part is that it'll be places like Cracker Barrel that will be one of the few places outside a museum/historical site that one can actually see and touch (to a degree) truly unique historical items like a old pesticide sprayer, wheat thresher and so on.

To me, its not that they have antiques on display but they way they destroy some of the value of an object in the way they attach items to the wall. That, and I wish they'd put some sort of placard next to the item describing its purpose as I think that would lend some sort of educational value as well.

Eh. Lived too long with a history major/historical site-museum worker (the aforementioned Mrs.), I guess.

I have a single book, called "A Pictorial History of the World War II Years", by Edward Jablonski. It's one my dad also gave me years ago. I've only read parts of it though, like the section on Graf Spee, not the whole book.

I think that decor is silly but the food is pretty good.

Most of the stuff they have on display is most likely something modern made to look old.i have never looked that close but I bet that is the case because you'll lots of places trying to pass off a modern remake of an old sign or item as an original.

@FloppyRat that must be a different book the set I and others that I have seen are broken down into one and two year segments along with a year of victory.Inside are plenty of photos not i have not seen elsewhere.I have seen other versions with different color covers before my guess is that salesmen went around selling them to people most likely more than one publisher liked the idea.

I'm just going off of what the wife tells me as "old stuff," is her field. I do agree about some of the signs being reproductions, though.

Yeah this one is a stand-alone book not done until 1977.

Not a flea market, but I paid $25 for this gem at a local bookstore about 20-25 years ago. The copyright date is 1918, and it measures 16" x 12" x 1" thick and contains four full color portraits of WW1 Allied generals.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a325/SailorSteve/DSCF0182.jpg

Aside from smaller b&w pictures of leading US naval officers from 1774-1918, it contains paintings and photos of major warships and many photos of naval training at the time.

The last pictures are all full-page, and includes this one:

Also about a decade ago I had a landlady who liked me a lot. When she died her children let me take a share of her stuff, and I ended up with a three-volume eyewitness account of WW1, with articles from the footsoldiers who fought it right up through the politicians who waged it.

There is a nice used book store about 30 miles from me that has a really good selection of older books from the 19th century mostly from 1840 up.I noticed in the literature section several copies of "Paradise Lost" by John Milton by different publishes a few are really beautiful and feature many lithographs those are several hundred dollars.

There where two smaller sized copies from the 1870's that where in very good shape and right around a hundred.I thought about buying one of those copies but did not.The next time I am in the same area as that store I think I will pick one of the smaller copies up.I looked very closely at the books and they are defiantly from that time period you can tell by the paper quality and the how the print looks.
