I looked around the forum and reviewed the manual but I couldn’t find an answer to this question. Is there anything that indicates how deep the sea level is so you don’t run aground?

On the map screen, move the cursor around. At the lower left, where the location data is, you will see the depth in meters. Be sure to remember to subtract 3 meters from this number when diving because the programmers did NOT take the draft of the boats into account when calibrating the depth gauge. You are always 3 meters deeper than what your gauges tell you.

I wanted to get into this game but the UI was just horrendous. I couldn't stand it for more than a couple minutes.

The UI is crude, but functional. The game is pretty much an overglorified beta. However, what will annoy you is the "magic" periscope spotting ability of the AI surface ships in an era where no one really knew what to look for until the war had progressed a few years. Likewise, much of the kills in the era were due to "prize rules", which meant the sub was surfaced and used its deck gun to sink merchants after the crew had time to abandon ship after being identified as enemy merchants. This and the Q-ship are not simulated.

The game is a valiant effort, but a World War I mod of SH3 would be a better experience.
