So, yeah, we've been here since
Clinton was president.
Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule from UK rule.
Princess Diana called for an immediate international ban on land mines (she was still young and pretty then)
Tony Blair became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
Mike Tyson bit Evander Holyfield's ear (ouch!)
Steve Jobs returned to run Apple Computers
Internet Explorer version 4 released
The first book in the award winning Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling is published
Titanic, Jurassic Park, & Men in Black were the big films.
This was before Facebook, Youtube, and Google.

In 16 years over 80,000 people have signed onto our forums. A little over 26,000 logged in sometime in 2012.
Well, I guess this is the part where I thank the people who made this happen.
Thanks to the moderators who help keep the forums sane.
Thanks to the game modders who work tirelessly to make the games even more fun.
Thanks to the donors, supporters, and contributors, you make the whole thing possible.
Thanks to the members who regularly take part in discussions, help other members, welcome new members, and make this place a home.
Thanks to the game developers who created the submarine and naval sims: we would be adrift without you.
Thanks to everyone who drops in, even for a single post. You count.
Looking forward to another year! :Kaleun_Cheers:

Ok, now, on to the fun stuff!
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=727&pictureid=6265
Here's how it's gonna work:
Rules
Over the next few days, a Subsim trivia question will appear in this thread. It will appear in a random sort of fashion, meaning who knows when. And your part in this scheme--you may guess at the answer. You may only guess ONCE per question, yeah? So, make your guess wisely. Make it count. No editing your post with a second guess.
Answer the questions in the same thread. This thread. Oh, just hit REPLY.
So, when Question 1 is posted, let's say you guess and guess wrong. Alas. You may not guess at Question 1 again. Someone will make a correct guess, and then Question 2 will be posted (try to keep up here). Now, you can take another wild shot at Question 2. If you are right, yay! You have a point in the prize pool, and then we move to Question 3, and everyone starts guessing.
Any members found using multiple forum accounts or starting a new forum account to play will be removed from the contest and the forum.
Points, prize pool, say what?
At the end of the contest, all the people who guessed correctly will have their name added to a winners list. If you guessed only one trivia correctly, your name will be in the list once. If you guess 4 questions correctly, your name will appear 4 times, greatly improving your chances at winning one of these prizes.
Prizes
Five people from the winners list will be drawn at random for one of these prizes.

It would be an understatement for this old grey wolf to say that Subsim.com is one heckuva place.
Just speaking for myself, it is the place that launched an amazing adventure full of highs and lows... that seem quite surreal in hindsight.
This place once consumed me, kept me awake all hours, and made me sweat buckets of bullets.
However, I will never forget many of the good things I was blessed to be a part of here, and most importantly, many of the awesome people I met here... some in person.
At the very least, it was all good for a laugh... because Subsim.com brought me to my arch-nemesis....

With the EMCON option OFF, all the platforms start the game with their radar ON. If you set EMCON OFF at game exit, the next game will have the radars ON in all platforms.

"Depending on the setting of the EMCON AT MISSION STARTUP option in the Game Options screen, your platforms’ radars are ON or OFF at the start of your mission. Be sure to visit the Game Options screen before starting your mission. If you start a mission in Emissions Control (EMCON) status, all of your platforms with the exception of airborne platforms have all sensors OFF. If you turn the EMCON AT MISSION STARTUP option OFF, all platforms begin the mission with radars ON."
At game exit you can lose sync if not set to OFF an upon restart units can change course to track.

GATO Submarine Battle Simulation by Spectrum HoloByte
aka
GATO: WWII GATO-Class Submarine Simulaton
Morse Code was only required on the highest difficulty setting.
From: Subsim Review:
"THE HISTORY OF SUBSIMS"
"This was the first sub simulator for a personal computer. The graphics were very limited, CGA with stick figures for ships, of which there were five enemy types. Although it simulated Gato class subs, there were only four bow torpedo tubes available. All functions were generated by the keyboard (mouse? what's a mouse?). The mission area was very limited--a group of islands in the Pacific, which was subdivided into 20 "quadrants". You pressed the "M" key for new missions and they were transmitted by Morse code. You were instructed to keep in mind "the enemy may break Allied code at some point. Some messages may be enemy fakes designed to trap you." How's that for early efforts at realism? Resource management was one of the game's subtler features. Your primary strategic objective was to complete as many missions as possible with the supplies you carry before returning to the quadrant where your subtender waits."
"Gato was the Pong of submarine simulations. When the first players encountered Gato, you can imagine they thought it was pretty significant. They had to start somewhere."

There, the player receives a teletype first a garbled message, the lot along with the name of a submarine of the Los-Angeles-Class. The player has to look for the appropriate page in the manual of the game, giving the name of the boat is called, and to enter the following three characters to abort the message to the code decrypt and receive commands to. The "Target Engine"
Ding! Ding! Ding! Winner!
The key component of Fast Attack was what we called the Target Engine. At the start of a scenario, all the "players" got loaded into the TE. This included own ship, good guys, bad guys, mines, airplanes, etc. Whatever could be detected or run into. When a torpedo was launched, it too got loaded into the TE. The TE's function was to report to whomever wanted the information "who detected whom". If mines were proximity mines, they would report when they detected another object in the TE. External logic would then decide what to do with that information. The TE was the heart of the whole game. -- Jim Frantz

Correct! Well, as far as we can tell.
The milk that is being poured in the video certainly looks like evaporated milk, rather than the condensed milk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zno_G3tSGV4)I am familiar with.
But our Subsim research intern says that the can matches this:

and that says condensed milk. I guess it is unsweetened condensed milk...?

I can see why they would have evaporated milk, just add 50% water and you have milk (but not very tasty milk).
Water is best left for the batteries and not powdered milk. :) Condensed milk would be better for cakes.

And in the US Fleet Boats? What was the cocktail? (Really I don´t know the answer; the ice cream was a hit, but...).
Regards.

Why would there be one? That was either made up for the book, or more likely just like in the movie one guy did that and gave it that name. The PT-boat guys made "bug juice", or "torpedo juice" made from torpedo alcohol as described earlier, but there may not have been and "official" coctail for either US subs or u-boats. It's all just sailors doing their thing.

Exactly - just like the aft torpedo room jokes........ far, far away from the control room.
Could probably make some fruit cocktail ferment but where could you hide it?

Can you source that?
Sorry for my late reply, but I had difficulties getting subsim pages yesterday.
I've dived into my archives and found a copy of the mentioned game.
I stand corrected.
There is indeed a kind of Morse used, but only when you send out your current position to HQ.
However the mission commands are just a simple page (pressing <alt>+m key).
I apologize for the confusion.

Correct! Well, as far as we can tell.
The milk that is being poured in the video certainly looks like evaporated milk, rather than the condensed milk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zno_G3tSGV4).......
.
Yep, evaporated milk.
My grandparents still buy the stuff by the crate.

A U-Boot is a beer cocktail (popular in Germany, Poland, Serbia and Flanders) that is made with a glass of beer and a shot glass of vodka. In Germany, the liquor k(?)orn is sometimes used instead, while in Flanders and the Netherlands, jonge jenever is preferred.
It is called a U-Boot (German abbreviation of Unterseeboot, "submarine") because the shot glass of vodka sinks to the bottom of the glass of beer. The shot glass then "surfaces" when the cocktail is drunk.
In Flanders, it is called a "Duikboot", literally translated "Submarine". It is seen as a variant on the kopstoot (lit. "headbutt") in the Netherlands; generally speaking, the kopstoot is taken as a shot followed by beer as a chaser, although dropping the glass of jenever is not unheard-of.
In Serbia, it is called "Podmornica", literally translated "Submarine".
In southern Germany, U-Boot is usually served as a combination of Fanta and cognac instead of beer and vodka.

Subsim Trivia question 21: At The onset of a career in Silent Hunter 4, who is number 1 on the leaderboard?
Well...It depends of the start date of the campaign.
In a campaign starting April 1942, Pearl Harbour, I have Fred Warder as leading as, with 14.300 tons.
Regards.
