1st mission:
Protect Dowly in his StuG.
Squadron was dispersed on take-off after a Russian fighter did an aerobatic display over the runway and then disappeared somewhere. Raptor and Task Force had...something happen, which resulted in an explosion, as usual.
I found an I-16 chasing a 109, and (much to my surprise) managed to shoot it down, then I found the IL-2s attacking the StuGs and managed to shoot down one and severely damage the other, landed off the runway as a bloody AI stole my landing slot, and Lolwaffled onto my nose.

The I-16 goes for a drink, no chute spotted.

The first IL-2 hits the deck, two chutes spotted.
http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/7604/grab0069.jpg
The second IL-2, I ran out of ammo trying to dent the thing, so broke away and wished him luck. I was creditted with the kill so he must have crashed shortly afterwards.

Myself and Arclight get an Iron Cross Second Class, Raptor gets shot.
Second Mission:
Protect Hitlers BMW
Took off in a bit more organised fashion this time. Followed Hunter to the Russian frontlines and then met a wall of MiGs and I-16s coming the other way. Got two on my six and was able to finally lose them by diving, building up speed and then using the 109s superior climb rate to get to safety. Spotted Raptor chasing one and then one jumped on his six, I curved in behind it and one curved in behind me, splat, oil everywhere. I broke off and ran for base followed by two or three persistant MiGs. Make it back to base with two MiGs still following, one breaks off and the other smashes into the ground as I try to land, I'm going far too fast to land properly so I pull up to go around, and then my engine catches fire...I pull up to gain altitude before jumping when....BOOM! Thank you Daimler-Benz...
Arclight chases an I-16 and gets his entire squadron on his tail for his pains, receives a nice hole in his wing and a shredded elevator so legs it back to base, discovers that he has no control over his throttle, so turns off the engine to land...and then glides into the ground just short of the runway.

3rd mission:
Protect some random heap of rubble
Took off and began patrol, spotted contacts which peeled off when we approached, I followed one which lead me on a merry chase around the sky until I was finally able to hold it in my sights for long enough to take its wing off. Turned out to be a LaGG. Found Arclight chasing a contact, another LaGG I believe, and covered him until he overshot his target whilst confirming his identity and then I lost both him and the target. RTB'd after a quick tangle with a contact which was being mobbed by about ten 109s made me Winchester. Nearly collided with a 109 but only saw a glimpse of it out of the corner of my eye, probably just as well I didn't see the full thing or I'd probably have panicked and stalled.

Second mission.
Intercept MiGs
Downgraded to E4s due to parts shortage... :hmmm: Took off and climbed, it wasn't long until we ran into a formation of nine enemy aircraft, peeled in behind them, one broke high and then another even higher. Lost the one I was after and spotted Task Force chasing one so stayed near him to cover, an I-16 then locked onto Task Forces tail so I turned to intercept. Managed to chase him down after a long drawn out manoeuvring battle (those little sods can sure move) and took his wing off as well. At this point his friends had arrived, jumping Task Force and then me in short order, took some hits to the cockpit and engine area, so hit the deck and ran for home. Raptor came to my assistance and managed to drag whatever it was off my tail, then I spotted some IL-2s, so turned to attack, lost them again and then realised that I really should have headed back for base when I had the chance since my engine was sounding more and more broken. Fortunately I was over friendly territory when the thing finally gave up the ghost so did a belly landing in a field. Nothing important fell off so it should be fixable.

They made the Zwilling to create a long-range heavy fighter and fighter-bomber, though IIRC they only made one prototype of it. The Americans not only did the same thing with the Mustang, they even put it into production and regular service, so the idea probably isn't completely bunk.

Prehaps a bit of reading on the subject of the F-82 might help?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-82_Twin_Mustang
And the P-51 pic that I posted isn't using rockets, those are ramjets. Theres also a Russian plane in IL-2 called the BI-6 or something like that, that also uses ramjets.
F-82 helped fill a large hole in the USAFs fighter pool at the time.
But the real fun comes when you bolt two Bombers together:

Okay...Ramjets....I just mistook them for rockets. That I like better than bolting two of the things together.
It's not about how it looks, though. It filled a role (or a couple of roles) that, during its service time (and during a rather tense times of the early Cold War), no other plane could fulfill. It was the best plane for the job because it was the only plane for the job. And it did that job very, very well.

How would they go about simply coordinating between the two craft? I'd assume that they'd have some sort of single control system but knowing management I bet they were like, "No. Both planes will have their crews. It'll work just fine. Trust us."

If planes could win wars based off of looks Britian should of beat the Germans in 1939 cause of the looks of the Spitfire:O:.
Besides 99.99999999% of those designs never even made it to the windtunnel testing stage, and even if the planes made it to the prototype stage it wouldn't of been possible for mass production due to Germany's lack of resorces and factories to build them in. Thoughts on continuing this? Takeda is willing to buy IL2 (on sale at GoG at the moment) and join us, Schroeder can join in too. I think that it's the only game that we all have that we can all play like we have done with ARMA2.
It's more stable than CloD and has more missions than RoF and doesn't have a learning curve like DCS, and we all have it or can get it for a low price.

I'm a bit divided about this. I think we would pretty much immediately run into the same problem as before: DCG.
If we were to find a proper campaign somewhere however I would be willing to give it another go.
Raptor1
06-23-13, 02:47 PM
I am in favour of playing IL-2 in general, of course, so I vote Aff. As for missions, from what I recall the last time we tried DCG (in this very thread) it worked out pretty well until we got sidetracked by some other game, so we can give that another shot. Alternatively (my preferred option), we can do what we did with that old P-38 campaign and find some hand-made campaign we can use and then modify it to suit our needs (with personal aircraft and the like). This gives us something that isn't DCG but doesn't require us to make our own missions, which we often get bogged down with.
One thing I think we should avoid though in both DCG or a hand-made campaign is having it set too early in the war. While we had some rather fun campaigns in Spain, Poland, France and so forth, we usually find ourselves trying to progress through the whole war and then being stuck in Russia or something and dropping the whole thing. This time we should try starting in 1942 or 1943 at least, which will also give us a much greater variety of aircraft and theater choices.
I did suggest that Raptor grab a campaign and modify it, and run both a DCG and a mod campaign together so that we don't get grinded down by DCG and it will make the limited amount of online co-op campaigns last longer. There is also the option of occasional dogfights and single co-op missions to throw into the mix.
DCG does get on my nerves sometimes too, but when you take a look at the online campaign list on M4T it's rather sparse and we've played most of them.
In regards to the early war machine question, I do see where you're coming form Raptor, but historically there's only a limited time frame in between early German air superiority over Russia and then Germany getting its backside handed to it from the left and right.
Right then...
Now...can I remember how to do this...
