Well, I'm not REALLY new, but I'm new to wanting to get the most out of my submarine simulator experience- I've played a LOT of flight sims, from CFS2+3, IL2, Falcon 4.0, and DCS A-10 so I'm not new to the hardcore simulation scene, just very new to the naval side. That being said, with my experience with super realistic and complex flight simulators and my ability to learn all of the intricate systems, I "should" be able to work out this manual TDC thing, right? What are some of the better tutorials for this floating around?

Also, I have Silent Hunter III with the GWX3 mod installed, but I can't get into it very well, the limited screen resolution really kills it for me, without the ability to scale up to 16:9 without stretching the image it's pretty much a no-go, though I have heard really good things about it. And this leads me to SH4 which I have been playing- I like it, while I hear it isn't AS good as SH3 with the GWX mod installed, it's a nice fit for me since it seems to be between the SH3+GWX with is supposed to be A++ and while it doesn't have the graphical glamor of SH5, I hear it plays much better and isn't hamstrung with that pesky DRM- and it still looks pretty nice. Is all of this correct?

So- What are the MUST MUST have mods for SH4? I've seen this Trigger Maru mod which looks flipping sweet, but as a new sub simmer, I have a feeling that it may be slightly too advanced for me- I caught a snippet of a conversation somewhere that mentioned a mod that would make SH4 into basically an updated SHIII adding all of the subs from SH3 and adding a N. Atlantic campaign though I haven't been able to find anything else on it, was that the now-dead GWX4?

WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:

SH4 has several good supermods. If you're worried about the difficulties of TMO, try Real Fleet Boat. It's aimed at being historically accurate, and for me it has the added plus of being the only one that changes Midway to look like the real thing. There is also Webster's Game Fixes Only, which doesn't aim to change much, just fixes the broken parts.

The Atlantic mod you're looking for is Operation Monsun. There are several good threads on it and its add-ons. it has its problems, and doesn't go nearly as far as the SH3 supermods to increase the experience, but it's all we have and it's quite good.

Also, the DRM always-online requirement has been gone from SH5 for a couple of years now.

"Also, the DRM always-online requirement has been gone from SH5 for a couple of years now"

I'm one who voted with my wallet and did not buy SH5 because of that one reason, and this is the first I heard that they relented on it. Wonder how many other holdouts hadn't heard the news, they should have been shouting that from the rooftops. Or better still made the guy who came up with the idea in the first place walk the plank.

I refused to buy it as well, until I saw this:

Be sure to check out some of the older threads on SH4, lots of good stuff there. Welcome to SUBSIM

You figured out DCS A-10?! In my opinion, if you can fly that sim, you can do anything, anywhere at any difficulty level and excel at it whilst blindfolded, tied up, locked in a small box and dumped into the bottom of the North Sea.

As far as SH4 is concerned, most people swear by TMO and it is a good way to go, however, if you're feeling somewhat intimidated by what it offers, you can still get all the TMO goodness in a more accessible package...

Research into TMO(WTW). This is the mod but 'With Training Wheels'. The bastards evem put a picture of a little kiddies bike with stabilisers onto the splash screen to remind you that you suck at sub-simming (I see it every time it load up).

I'd say TMO(WTW) and a bundle of Webster's fixes make up the vast majority of my mod make-up for SH4 and it's great. Dipped my toes into SH5 and it just made me love SH4 even more.

Good luck,

Rob.

Thanks for the information guys, much appreciated. And to Stargazer- Yep, I've always been a fan on "difficult games" I've been able to pick up most games that would give casual gamers nightmares- I believe my boost from DCS A-10 came from flying Falcon 4.0 with the BMS mod- REALLY, I tackled training like this, and it should work for everyone who wants to learn it- I mapped all of my important keys to my joystick and flew a bunch to get familiarized with what the functions are, and the next phase of learning consists of saying to myself "Hmm, I wonder how I could X" and then googling "How to X"- This phase of learning lasts forever. It's quite fun, especially flying multiplayer, I have learned how to send and receive targets to/from friendly AC, and input coordinates for strikes, so it adds a lot when you can coordinate attacks with buddies.

Speaking of "difficult games"- I'm also a fan of space simulators, KSP is a blast and I've spent a bit of time with Orbiter as well.

Welcome aboard. We think the forward hatch is leaking air. Can you check that for us. Put some soapy water around the seal and look for bubbles.
