View Full Version : Time between patrols?

Hello again! After a long absence due to a number of computer issues, I've jumped back into SH3 land. My inspiration, not surprisingly, came after deciding that I hadn't seen Das Boot in a while. :arrgh!: So, I watched the director's cut, and of course got to thinking about this wonderful game (and its still-vibrant modding community!). I'm running SH3 on a laptop, but the specs of a middle-of-the-road laptop seem to run the game just fine. I've always been one to play the game "vanilla", but as I've worked through my patrols some of the "little things" in the stock game have started to annoy me. For one, it's 1941 and I've already given Mr. Kretschmer a run for his money, and appear to be the most successful U-Boat captain ever.
So here's my question: How long would a U-Boat crew typically spend ashore between patrols?
I'm sure time ashore could be lengthy if you have to wait for repairs or upgrades, and the stock game accounts for this somewhat, but I've completed something like 16 patrols in less than 24 months, which doesn't seem right at all. If I recall correctly SH3 Commander has an option to lengthen time between patrols, so I might employ that on my next new career. One of these days I'm also going to dive into the GWX mod, but I like to take baby steps.
Time spend between patrols depends on your Hull Integrity at the end of the patrol and the modifications you make in the base since gathering the new weapons, conning tower and the installation of them. Minimum time spend in base is 28 Days.
Silent Hunter 3 uses the following conventions to evolve time during the career:
a. Changing or acquiring a subsystem/weapon on your u-boat will evolve time with 1 to 3 days of game time.
b. Changing to a new u-boat will evolve time with up to 2 months of game time.
c. Changing the conning tower on your u-boat will evolve time with 3 weeks of game time.
d. Repairing each hull damage percent at return from patrol will evolve time with 1 day of game time.
e. Even if you don't have damage or you didn't modified/improved your u-boat, the minimum time you have to spend in base between patrols is 28 days.
You can use SH3 Commander to fix this to the number of days you want like 7 days but personally I love to leave it as it is in GWX to be more realistic.
You can check below for real war petrols in uboat.net :

As far as I can see, its between 1 - 17 Days.

if those little bugs get really annoying you may want to really consider a mega mod. all will fix some annoying bugs but none will fixe them all. your time in port is one that can be bothersome at times on vanilla. NYGM has one of the longer in port fixes. changing subs can be anywhere from 2 months to a full 6+ months (type 9s take much longer type 7s are an average 4 months). subsystem upgrades can take 3 -45 days if i remember right engines taking much longer (about a month ) than a hydrophone. this is because of sea trials.
I currently use GWX though.

I keep Commander set to Random. I've had two-day turnarounds in a Type II, and I've waited 45 days. I like the uncertainty.

and the uncertainty is also realistic because shore leaves would be canceled bdu might have a emergency mission etc.

Thanks all for the help/enlightenment! Based on the links provided looks like my number of patrols in approx. 24 months isn't necessarily unusual. As for my tonnage, well, 40% realism is as advertised, only about 40% realistic. :)
Seriously considering GWX this time around...waiting on my copy of the game (ordered through the Subsim Amazon link, of course!) to arrive on Wed....my current copy is sans German language...what fun is that?!?!
Also debating going to manual targeting...that's another of the "little annoyances" that's getting bigger...just too easy to fire off perfect shots at 90 deg. AoB all the time. Granted, I'll be missing the easy way to do things when 1942 rolls around and ASW is in full swing.
I definitely recommend GWX for more realism and texture. About Manual Targeting, At least learn how to do it even you don't want to use it, since that’s where all the fun is .
