View Full Version : Is SH5 as free as SH3 yet?

What I mean by the title is: is Sh5 as dynamic, engrossing, and complicated with extravagance as SH3 yet? You can play the whole war, a slew of different u-boats, and so much more in SH3.
I'm a huge fan of SH3, but I'm ready to take the leap into SH5 for better looks. I know SH3's folder structure and file structure better than I do my own personal life, so I am no stranger. I have hundreds and hundreds of mods incorporated into SH3, without the use of JSGME.
What I like is realism, "historicalism" and good looks (in that order) in my mods.
So what mods should I use for SH5? Does SH5 have Type II's via mods?
What u-boats have been added via mods? Where are the ship model databases?
It's a big moment for me, because I've spent years modifying my Sh3 folder. Quite emotional.
Thank you in advance.

Other than graphics, I think silent hunter 5 is a huge step down from 3. I'm sure many others will agree on here.
I only play 5 because I can't get used to the SH3 controls (having started with 5).

None.
Use the OHII mod with SH5. To me the graphics are so much better, it's more engrossing, and yes mor complicated. It takes a bit getting used to SH5 but for some reason it just pulls you in and gets you hooked on it. But you also need a higher end computer inorder to play it without it crashing on you. Installation will check to see if your computer can handle it.
Know that you will select missions and not be sent to Grid areas like in SH3. That's the part that takes getting used to. You will need to get tonnage values[not shown to you with OHII] to complete each section of a Campaign with times constraints. If you don't use OHII, then you will see what the required mission tonnage is. With stock SH5 it's high but can be reduced by using the Reduced Mission Tonnage mod. And you need mods to make SH5 work as it should. No mods mean you play a broken SH5... and that's not fun at all.

Currently, this is not a big problem SH5.
In the near future you will be able to choose. Or perform "Missions" or patrol "Square". (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1726889&postcount=1/)

Thank you for the responses. Not as encouraging or hopeful as I would have hoped.
Does SH5 have the possibility of becoming as engrossing as SH3, in time?

SH5 still has the possibility of becoming the best of all of them. It is taking longer than expected, though.

I think everything will be. We must hope.
For example TDW. Only now figured out "intelligence aircraft." There is confidence that it will be so with the rest.

This is a simple task for the campaign where the objective patrol area (big circle) can be switched for squares and named grids.
Also - mission (orange icons) can be switched for smaller grids

Yes, the only problem I see is that convoy reports by B.d.U. would remain in lat/long format :hmmm:

As long as it appears on the map it shouldn't be a problem. On the other hand it would be nice if the whole system could be lifted from SH4.

Yes I see, but are they always shown on the map?
Usually I missed those reports, and when I read them, they were long been removed :O:
Indeed, converting those reports in MQK format would be the best option, supposed that it is going to be possible...

Keep in mind that there are Captains who cherish "Missions" and "Grid coordinates".
Probably have to make two versions of the "OH".:03:

Personally I like missions, as long as they are designed according to historical U-boat orders: they make the game more varied, and you are set free to accept them or not.
And if our mission area is designated through grid coordinates rather than by long/lat, much better :yep:

Can you explain how SH4 does this. I'm a computer programmer and I've been looking for something to mod as a project. I would be willing to at least check it out.
At least with grid coordinates you have a larger area to patrol. Or at least is seems that way.
Could missions and grid areas to patrol be combined together? If you look at dropping a spy off at a certain point then I'd think you still have to keep missions involved in the simulation. Other mission types along this line could also be added to make things more interestiing. Photo recon, picking up a spy or downed pilot. Even capturing an enemy ship.

A programmer's skill is what many of us need. If I had the patience to read hex, I would give it a go.
I am particularly interested in creating a dynamic campaign for silent hunter 3. Or any SH game for that reason.
There is a mod created dynamic campaign generator for for IL-2, CF3 and Strike Fighters here:http://www.lowengrin.com/news.php
Perhaps something could be worked out to figure this out. If SH3 Commander can read the Campaign files to give us a sunken ships report, I don't understand why it would be difficult to create a program that deletes a sunken ship from the SCR campaign layer via program. It would just have to delete the ship entry from the campaign layer.

So the short of it is that people want radio reports in MQK format instead of lat./long. for historical accuracy?

As long as people do not want.:D MQK (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1726889&postcount=1/) is not over. However, after the release they will need it.:yep:
Must be prepared in advance.

This is a good suggestion.:up: But then we have to solve this problem. (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=201414/)
Although this is not a problem. But, it is better to solve it. Then it will be professionally.:O:

Yes - a toggle button lat/long off/on would be the best option.
Otherwise - 2 versions may be required

Hi Trevally,
You mean ships are deleted from the SH5 campaign file when they are sunk? Capital ships, etc...
This cannot be done in SH3.
Trevally.

Yes - with each save or campaign adv, all ships marked "Unique" are checked by the campaign and if dead, they are dead:-
This is the roster cfg where unique ships are stated
[UnitClass]
ClassName=BBRoyalSovereign
UnitType=11
AppearanceDate=19160316
DisappearanceDate=19480301
DisplayName=BR BB Royal Sovereign (proxy)
IsUnique=yes
[Texture 1]
TextureName=
LightmapTextureName=data/Sea/NBB_QueenElizabeth/NBB_QE_O01.tga
NormalmapTextureName=
StartDate=19390101
EndDate=19461231
Frequency=1
[Unit 1]
Name=HMS Revenge
DOC=19160316
DOD=19480901
[Unit 2]
Name=HMS Royal Oak
DOC=19160616
DOD=19391014
[Unit 3]
Name=HMS Royal Sovereign
DOC=19160616
DOD=19490401
[Unit 4]
Name=HMS Resolution
DOC=19161216
DOD=19480501
[Unit 5]
Name=HMS Ramillies
DOC=19170916
DOD=19480301
;************* THE END ***************
And here is the campaign profile for that ship:-
[CampaignProgress.MisResult 15.MisKill 6]
Name=HMS Royal Oak
ClassName=BBRoyalSovereign
Type=11
Side=1
KillDate=19390930
Tonnage=31000
Long=-356980.218750
Lat=7070345.000000
Height=-12.800246
IsFromSingleMis=false
[CampaignProgress.UniqueShipsStatus 16]
Name=HMS Royal Oak
ClassName=BBRoyalSovereign
Active=false
Dead=true
As you can see - I sank this ship 30/09/39 and the campaign knows it and will not use it again:know:
Many people here state facts about the campaign engine for SH5, but they have not taken the time to look and thus get it wrong.
