Thought it would be interesting to get peoples opinions on this scenario:

Large Convoy, clear day mid 1940:

Just off Lowestoft:

It gets better, in 18m of water:

Fully loaded in my TypeIIA:

Suicide? I'm so tempted but I can kind of see how its going to turn out... :arrgh!:

Oh, and I'm strictly adhering to D.I.D rules.

So, what would YOU do?

Get in there, watch for mines though. If your going to go, go in style.

watch for mines though.

Once bitten twice shy, that was my previous patrol. Killed my Weapons officer, destroyed my batteries, limped back to base on the surface.

Could say I'm on life number 9 now...

My experience tells me to take a few pot shots from long range and head for deeper water the minute the fish leave the tubes.

if you manage to get one or two you up your tonnage and send Winston a message that his ships arent safe anywhere

Suicide plenty of war left out there but if you wanted to attack Id say lie in front of them and hit the front ships then move through the convoy so those destroyers searching for you have to dodge ships

Still suicide for me though, I'm terrible at dodging destroyers. Especially when in 18 meters of water

Newbie question - What is D.I.D?

The only way i would shoot - if this is not possible, go home, and do so quietly.

move to the sea side of the convoy.
get away from their "street" at least 3000 metres off the main line.
(DDs presume you shot from 900 - 1100 metres and will look there)
lie in front of them.
as they pass your nose, fire a set of medium speed surface runners at the biggest fatso you can find.
If there is no really major cargo, go try 3 fast shots at smaller ones, one per target.

lie in wait to finish targets off.

Floppy rat D.I.D is dead is dead meaning once you die it's over you delete the save and start again. Some players use SH3 commander and just start from the point they died at as a new commander.

...if theres time. you could follow them untill dark, finding out where the destroyers are then slip in amongst them and take your pick.
then comes the 'But....'

18m depth is a death wish.
If you get spotted it is all over.

I would have fire all 3 tubes from a safe distance and head away when the last torpedo had left its tube.

I think flag4 has the best advice. Shadow and gather information on escorts and then try a night surface attack. This early in the war, you should be able to pull it off. That is one of the most satisfying accomplishments in SH3, especially when you don't even have to dive to escape and the escorts are throwing starshells out and searching for you in the totally wrong spot. :arrgh!:

I think a daylight submerged attack in that shallow of water borders on suicide against an escorted convoy, even early war.
Maybe if there was only one escort and you get in prime position on the seaward side, you might be able to pull off a submerged attack. Shoot and run for deeper water and then become a quiet hole in the water when the escort comes sniffing around looking for some revenge. Type II's are pretty good at that.

I don't think anyone would fault you if you let this convoy go and waited on easier pickings. It's gonna be a long war.

the only way to please Uncle karl is to freaking Die.
Never ever give that slacker any kind of satisfaction, you hear?

The skill in SH is navigation. Shadow them a bit and wait for a better position (although they may be a mini-coastal convoy, headed for a very close-by port).

Well heres what I did:

(BTW apologies. when I said 'in 18m of water' I meant, depth under keel. I was at periscope depth at the time.)

I moved in to about 2km, and sat on the bottom. Once the convoy had passed directly in front of me and was at about 30 degrees, I rose to periscope depth, let fly with my three eels, and immediately made a flank speed run in the exact opposite direction of the convoy.

Slightly disappointing outcome in terms of tonnage, I only had one hit, on a small merchant, but he went to the bottom in any case.

The rear escorts started heading my way and I eased off a little and dived to 30m, skimming the bottom a little, slight damage to my bow torpedo room

A few random depth charge runs later, and with slight damage to my watchtower, I made it to safety. Now all the while I didn't hear a single ping, and I can only assume they didn't have ASDIC, would that figure? They definitely knew my rough location, so I'm certain if they had ASDIC they would have used it, and with hindsight would definitely have been dead.

All in all a good result, I live to fight another day, and have shown the British that they better not get complacent. :arrgh!:

Let 'em go. You're caught in shallow water with nowhere to go in a sub that can't outrun anything.

Thats better than nothing, well my recommendation is to change your sub asap , II A was for WWI and many commanders upgraded to VIIB till 1940.

Once, I attacked a "Task Force" , I think the year in game was 1940 January, first I could only see SouthHampon Class (10 K tonnage) then I noticed there is something even bigger than that in the convoy : A Illustrious Class (Flight Carrier),I had only 3 torpedoes left, thinking I will never get a second chance to shot I launched all of them, 3 successfully hits and It sunk as soon as 3rd torpedo hit it.

Now the problem was, even deep under keel was over 1000 meters, I wasn't able to dive deeper than 20 meters because earlier I had lots of 1 to 1 fights surfaced with my deck gun with ASW Trawlers and A&B Classes and my Hull was nearly fully damaged (%3.1 in patrol end). I did heared some ping but they never found me and I slipped between them :D I think the crew was just trainees since I made my approach surfaced at 18 knots, there was a bit fog but if the crew was efficient they will had seen me since I was able to clearly see them.

Not quite. U-1 the first IIA was launched 15 June 1935.

I love my TypeII, dives in a flash and is pretty nimble, I've been toying with the idea of upgrading to a larger boat for the last couple of patrols, but I am really enjoying my coastal campaign :)

I think this thread is going slightly off topic, oops.

I would personally attack nightfall decks awash from +1500m. One juicy target 2 eeels.
Impact pistol , dont do magnetic at 18m .
Shoot, turn and get the hell out of there decks awash to deeper water.
