Been a while since I played SH4, can't remember anything. I have version 1.4, which near as I can find is the latest patch. I'm still getting this kind of nonsense;

After evading a depth charge attack and clearing the area, I surfaced only to find I can't move on the surface. 2 diesels destroyed means I still have two undamaged and theoretically operable diesels, but whatever I set the telegraph for it just won't go. What's the point of surviving if you can't get back to base? I've had the destroyed rudder before, but first time I've seen this, half the engines gone means no moving no battery recharge? Hard to believe this bug hasn't been addressed someplace.

No, 1.4 was the last one.
Many things were made better with SH4, some were made worse, and some were unchanged. Since SH4 came directly from SH3, where are actually only two diesels, but they are labeled as four. If both are destroyed, you're out of luck, since SH4 doesn't even have the teleport home that SH3 did. Sorry.

That sucks, guess I'll have to relearn S3D to see if I can make either port or starboard indestructable or something. Cheating takes a lot of the fun out of it but if the game is gonna cheat there's not much choice.

According to what I have seen posted on this forum, the SH4 sub model only has two engines. This is because the code was lifted from SH3, which was written for U-boats, which only had two. As with so many things, this was not changed for SH4, just ported over. As I understand it, the SH4 damage model appears to have four Diesels, but each is just half the damage points for speed reduction purposes. If you lose two engines, you lost all Diesel power. Thank UberSoft for having whipped out a quick-and-dirty mod of SH3 to the Pacific Theater and selling it as a new game. Since UberSoft does not allow anyone to touch their executable code, the two-Diesel limit, like many other inaccuracies, can never be corrected by anyone but them.
BTW, v1.5 has been out for some time. It does improve on v1.4, and includes the "U-boat expansion." The bad news is, it isn't free. Cost is about $8 to $10. And BTW, this forum has seen lots of complaints about upgrades downloaded from the Steam website. YMMV.

you really do want to get v1.5 anyway since 99.9% of all mods found today are made for that verson and wont work for v1.4
if you can still find them (some are here in our downloads section) even those that are for v1.4 are mostly earlier less finished works from modders and because of that they sometimes still have "issues" but they work ok

Go to mods DL site and get TMO for 1.4. I played it for a year and it works well and will solve 98% of stock issues. Should be a version for RSRD for 1.4 there as well.

I would echo BigWalleye, get the "U-boat missions" v1.5. It's worth it.
I don't know about TMO, but my understanding is that RFB made the engines more durable, to reduce the likelihood of your situation, though you still have only two.

TMO does the same, rare you'll lose your engines.
