Hi,
I can see there are a number of people posting here with questions and infrmation and advice requests on how to fix SH5. Whilst it would be a lie to say I'm about to do the same, I'm hoping I'm doing it in such a way that you guys who know what you're doing in these parts don't feel like you're rehashing too much... Tell me to 'get bent' and 'use the flaming search' however should you have answered this an endless number of times already though.
I started with SH3, then moved to SH3 with the GWX mod. I was convinced then about the power of modders in the SH community. When I became tired of waiting for SH3 to load up each time I fancied dipping into it, I moved to 4.
4 proved to be a nightmare and I quite literally threw a strop and promised myself 'never again'. That was a total lie. After a significant PC upgrade, SH4 was now playable and it took me some time to find the right balance of mods to get it just right. As it happened, the TMO((wtw) yes, I know... I suck) was just about right for me in terms of difficulty and entertainment.
Whilst I still live 4 and hope I continue to do so for some time, I yearn for some proper Atlantic action like 3 gave me. So I figured it was time to try 5. I placed my order today, it should be with me no later than Monday.
My understanding is that 5 is the most hideous thing since cthulu but the clever and resourceful modding cummunity set it straight on behalf of the developers (once again).
I suppose my most important question is: Should I get used to the broken and horrid vanilla before I tinker with it, or should I start modding it the moment the install finishes?
I've got the mods for beginners thread in my bookmarks so I can start chipping away at the list, but I'm a little ashamed to admit that I don't really know what most of it means.
I figured I should check in first to ensure I'm getting what's right for me. I know it's hard because what's great for Mr A is absolute hell for Mr B but given that I'm comfortable with a mildy (I'll stop kidding myself one day) dumbed down Trigger Maru in 4, what is the closest to a one-stop-shop supermod in 5?
Or is it more a case of, the supermods are campaign mods and everything else fixes everything else?
Apolgoies for rambling, I'm just keen to see how much 5 has to offer given how much nicer 4 was over 3. I want to be prepared but am already stupendously lost.
Cheers,
Rob.

Bum!... I didn't even spell it right!
Should I get used to the broken and horrid vanilla before I tinker with it, or should I start modding it the moment the install finishes?
When i started with SH5, i didn't even tried the broken vanilla game, and i don't regret :yep:
If i was you, with fresh install and game updated to V1.2, i would start in first step patching SH5 with TDW generic patcher.
To me, it's a must!
Following Trevally very good step by step tutorial http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=197960 it's quite easy to get rid of stock bugs + new cool features.
After, you get a Generic Patcher folder that you will use as a mod (always activated in first place)
Then, or you use SH5 only with the Generic Patcher mod, or you add some more mods to adjust/correct SH5 to your liking...
I would recomand the FX update + New Uis 7.1 interface + IRAI as essentials for a start!
But there are so many awesome mods around here, it's hard to know what you would like!
And also depending on your PC abilities...

Many thanks, Fifi.
I'll try and get my head around how some of these mods apply. Some of them look a little different than what I'm used to. I've already got the 13 (or is it 14?) mods out of the basic beginner mod list which I believe already includes the IRAI and FX.
However, I don't think the generic patcher was there. Having checked the link you gave me, it looks as though I saw a release thread for it and bookmarked it for future reference just in case.
Given that this seems to not be in the recommended noob list, would you still suggest putting this in first before all the others or to do it last so that it takes precedence over the ones currently lined up to go in?
The only reason I ask is because, I'm currently going through a rocky spell at the moment, my judgement is a bit haywire and I'm trying to find new stuff to keep my mind ticking over while I wait for my meds to kick in. But if I mess this up and get CTD's, I'll just shelve the entire thing and it could be a while before I get my act together and try all this again by which time I'd have forgotten I asked these questions in the first place.
Many thanks,
Rob.
Rob, make a couple of copies of SH5 in the Ubisoft folder. That will save you reinstall time.
Don't be afraid to ask as we'll all give you a hand at getting it running. CTDs are only a minor setback. Most of us have that problem from time to time. I'm only on my 11th or 12th resetting up SH5. It's a pain but not as hard as it seems. Correct mod install order is the key. Sober's list and install order is your best help. Look here.... http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=192374

Game arrived earlier than expected...
I had a quick look at the UI in the unmodded version. I thanked the universe for modders, in all the mods suggested in the afore-linked beginners thread and then bricked it completely.
I have no idea what the hell is going on.
Please, please I beg of you, tell me it's possible to make 5 appear like a clone of 4... key-commands, mouse controls, toolbars and ui...
So far as I can tell, the developers of 5 said, "Hey, 4 was pretty bloody good. Let's start over and piss everybody off!".
Eurgh!

Not really a clone of 4, but pretty close with the New UIs TDC by TDW...
Not sure a complete noob could adjust it, but this new interface is completly customizable with all the dials of SH4 (even SH3)

Strange... I already have that installed.
Or at least I presume I do since I downloaded it and added it via the JSGME. If I recall correctly, it was one that came with about a thousand sub-folders and the release thread makes War and Peace look like a pamphlet.
I've tried to take it in as best I can but it would appear that opening the UI config tool is pointless as it comes up blank.
At least I only paid £5 for this... Am wondering if I should have just been grateful with SH4.
Other way to customize New UIs TDC, you have to go in data/scripts/menu/TDWUserOption.py and open with notepad.
Save changes in unicode, and do it when mod deactivated.

Wrong way!
You should use OptionsFileEditorViewer to edit options.. if you do it manually you can "break" the file..

Really?? ...but i did it to enable few things as IO map tools for instance...and all was fine :hmmm:
Ok, i trust you Volodya anyway :03:

vanilla SH5 1.2 is not that bad and had some interesting changes. I would take some time to figure out how vanilla works first, so you can then figure out what you want to change.

As mentioned above, I applied mods and I can't use TDW's built in configurator to apply the SH4 UI because it allows me to set an SH5 install path but nothing else.
The release thread says just about everything in the world except what I need to do to get it working. When I lauch the Options application, I have one menu entry; 'File'. In that, there are 2 'open' items and both are greyed out.
I tried uninstallling the mods and checking to see if it needed to be done pre-installation and it does the exact same thing.
This alongside this poxy stupid uplay nonsense is leaving me with quite a sour taste.
Is it worth it? Seriosuly... Should I just stick with SH4 and be happy with a Silent Hunter title that looks good, is modded well, works flawlessly, is stable and launches straight off the start-menu shortcut with one click?
Yes the Germans had the cool boats, and the Atlantic has more of a lure for me than the Pacific, but at this stage, I think I'd rather take SH3 over SH5. Somehow, waiting 16hours for a game to load seems preferable to this debacle.
Trevally.

No - if you are not able to install the mod - chances are you will have no time to learn the game either

LOL... That's the same assumption we all agree upon. Whether they did it intentionally who knows, but SH5 was still released broken.

I tried the vanilla game of SH5 and hated it. I tried modding it using Stoianm1's tutorials and love watching his YouTube "How to..." vids. They are awesome and proof of how impressive and immersive SH5 can be. However I became completely stuck as far as modding was concerned and had immense failure with my attempts.
Now recently I bought SH3 via Steam and have been modding it without too many problems (well I got further than SH5) and am enjoying the adventure. After a while I will go back to SH4 with mods for a change of scenery. So I would just stay with SH4 and SH3 and mod as much as possible for the 'perfect' gaming experience.
Happy hunting :arrgh!:
