I have contemplated buying this game for some time now. Is anyone still playing it on line? Is it a worth while single player game?

Yes, I just bought it around Christmas on sale. I think its a really good game, but I don't play online. I've been playing around with the scenario editor some and managed to add more ships to the existing scenarios, but have not been able to create a completely new scenario yet. I like it that you can command any of the ships in the game though, even up to the cruisers.
