View Full Version : There is a ghost in my boat
Something strange is happening on my boat. I was stalking this 9 ship convoy, unescorted. Could barely sit on my seat, so exited I was. They were still pretty far, so I was just floating there in periscope depth and waiting them to get closer. Everything is set up and ready to start collect data, but suddenly somebody ordered "ahead slow". I ordered to stop. After a while again: Ahead slow. Then Ahead 1/3. And Ahead Standard. All the way to the flank speed. Seems to me that somebody tried to sabotage my triumphatic effort to put nine ships under the sea.
Shutting down my mic didn't help, but disabling speech recognition did. So I think some kind of noise in line-in is interfering and giving "gear up" commands. I never use that command and it is actually hard for me to get that command to apply by speech. This has never happened before. Must find the cause. :hmmm:
Hmmm... I hope that is not a real ghost speaking from beyond...
Which reminds me one actually scary happening, must tell this (off topic but sorry)! I was sitting here on my computer, it was very late at night. My wife was sleeping in the next room and I had no game or music on, I was just reading something or writting, can't remember clearly. But suddenly I hear this very faint babble, like somebody is speaking somewhere near. In foreign language, propably russian (I'm finnish). At first I thought I was just tired and ignored it, it was so faint I could barely hear it and wasn't even sure if it was real or just my imagination. After awhile I shut my computer down and I''m turning of the speakers, when I hear the chatter again (no fan noise from the computer anymore) and realize it comes from there! Nothing at that point was driving the speakers, computer is the only thing attached to them and it was no longer on. I yelled to my wife to come and asked can she hear it. She just tiredly stared at me and thought I was a dick to wake her for this, but when I told and showed her there was nothing on to drive the speakers, she got goose bumps and begged me to turn the speakers off... That WAS kinda scary, I listened that chatter about five minutes before it faded away... :o

Yes, I think I must. Can you recommend some good group to call? Ghostbusters seemed to be too, hmm, unprofessional.

Bernard was the name Dowly chose for his first picture when he created the SH3 Funny Picture Thread back in 2005. He has since become the chosen imaginary crewman we blame for all of our own screwups.
He has since been mentioned countless times, and has had many threads dedicated solely to him.

Yes, Bernard wrecked my last boat by surfacing in front of a ship trying to ram us. I ordered crash dive, and Bernard blew the Tanks, right in front of the steamer we already torpedoed.
First time in history that a U-boat was sunk by a Torpedoed steamer.
Thanks Bernard:O:
PS: Yes M4XDmG, You have a ghost, and he's playing your game. He probably doesn't like having the plug pulled either...:D
If you have any more occurrences, please by all means, check back on this, sounds kind of creepy.

He's also a clumsy bear on ABC! Check it out for yourself! The show is, appropriately enough, called Bernard.
Ok, Bernard you say... :hmm2: Now I know who to blame when things go bollix. Didn't have time to play today, so don't know is he still aboard, we'll see.
And yeah, I'll update here if something strange happens. I haven't experienced that speaker chatter since. That's actually only time I've ever encountered anything that weird. We had just bought this house. It's built 1928 and has seen a lot... If only these walls could talk... No WAIT! :o Careful now with these wishes...
Your speaker possession story reminded me of case we had here in Italy, not too long ago:
radio broadcasts from Radio Maria (a Vatican held radio station) could be heard from most entry phones in the Rome area. :yep: :haha:
From the following investigations it resulted that the horned one had nothing to do with this oddity. Its reason was more mundane, but not lesser extravagant: in their evangelizing ardor, they had installed overpowered radio transmitters and they were forced by law to downtune them a bit. Dunno if Vatican was condemned to pay a fine for its radio-magnetic bombardment, but I doubt that ;)

Many years ago I was sitting in my living room with the radio playing while I was reading. Without any warning a deep, growling voice started speaking. The words were unintelligible, and my hair stood on end. I had no idea what it could be. A couple of days later it happended again, and I began to get worried. Yet another couple of days and it happened a third time, only this time I could understand the words: "Breaker one-nine..."
It turned out there was a CB home transmitter just a block away, overriding whatever station I was tuned to. Citizens Band radio is the set of frequencies used by truck drivers and other motorists to stay in touch with each other on the road. The home station was quite powerful.
I suspect your "ghost" is the same sort of thing.

does voice recognition work in games? I've never actually heard of that before.

Yes, absolutelly. I can't imagine a better way to give orders as a captain in subsimulation! Finding skwasjers (mitons) speech recognition mod for sh5 was awesome. almost everything can be done via speech, from "report our position via dead reckoning" to "Fire tube three!" Etc. Etc. It works through win7's own speech recognition engine, the more you train it to your voice, the better it works.
I'd be afraid if I used speech recognition, that I or someone coming in my computer room coughed or pharted the boat would blow up. Or at the least dive to an unplanned ending.
