Who else finds it humerous that the Icelandic alphabet doesn't contain a 'c'. Surely they live in Ieland then, and are Ielandi people?

:hmmm:

Or the spitting-lama-sound in English - the "th". A constant source of endless laughs and mumblings for us foreigners! ;) You cant teach introductory course in fifth class at a German school, without the kids rolling over each other in laughter and spitting around like idiots.

:O:

And have you ever heard what a German throat produces in strange noise when trying to pronounce one of the most alienating words I ever heared - "squirrel"?

Belgium had a similar list until the 1980s I think, dated back to the days of Napoleon IIRC, surnames I think, since the Netherlands had surnames enforced upon it by Boney after he ran them over.

I'm sure that in their own language it all makes sense. That joke only works when you spell it in English.

Sounds like New Zealand where they blocked childrens names like Fish & Chips, Sex Fruit, Fat Boy and Twisty Poi.
Its outrageous I tell ya.

That is so very true...I have many friends over there and all the names have literal meanings.

Example....Johnny Von Rodenberg = Johnny from the red mountain.

:yep: I knew a South African chap with the surname of Oosthuizen, which I believe is something like east house. Before Nappy visited Rotterdam though, it was similar to Iceland for surnames, so it'd be something like Johnny Peterzoon.

My last boss over in Dordrecht was called Charles Haneveer = Charles Chicken feather :)

I'm quite happy that we have similar laws in Germany. My in-laws are hippies, so I am glad I don't have to address my Frau as "white rabbit" or the like...:smug:

Actually the people from Björkland have two letters in their alphabet for the 'th'-sound. :know:

And damn you for mentioning squirrel :timeout:, now I have tried to pronounce it about 674 times and I am convinced I can't spell it...

Oh, you're looking for a frú Steinsteypa in Iceland? Well here you go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCwWhz3WDsQ All you'll need is a guitar, some beer and a lopapeysa. :sunny:

After seeing some of the stupid names (or spelling of names) that US parents give their kids, I can see the value in some sort of approved list.:yep:

Lewis Black has a skit about this and he says that there should be a government office with the authority to tell stupid parents, "uh no, you can't name your kid that. What are you thinking.?

:D

I've told the story more than once about the woman I knew back in the '70s. She said her son was the only solid thing in her life, so she named him Concrete.

:DI remember news article few years ago about couple who named their children after Hitler's cabinet. :nope: Oldest son's first name was Adolf and second name was Hitler. Same thing with other kids. I don't remember their surname anymore.

Try "Skwir'll" :D Now that is English with this terrible German accent that I always try to avoid at all costs :haha: - but I cannot help it. I cannot get it correctly out of my throat, too. Must be some difference in Teutonic and Anglosaxon anatomy.

Terrible word. Terrible.

I'm not exactly sure how a name that means "light wind" could really be embarrassing. I've heard of stranger names then that, there was someone who named their child Hashtag (i.e Twitter), theres still one that I've never forgotten was someone who was on an episode of Modern Marvels (I think) whos name was....Lunchbox!!! Plus some of the names celebs give their kids can really be embarrassing!
