My dad was on a destroyer in 1946. When I was a kid I remember that we had a picture of it in our rec room downstairs. He did tell me the name once but that was 40 + years ago. He passed away in 2008 and my mom is still kicking but she says he never told her anything about it. We found the picture at Christmas but nobody in my family has a clue. My brother thought it was the USS Helm but I don't think that can be.
Anyway where would one start? Any ideas?

What was his name+rank? That would help me look up crew lists!

Since you're next of kin, you or your mother can request his service records online. Start here: http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/
