Oh, it's BRILLIANT! Not quite Das Boot, but easily a match for The Hunt for Red October!

Finished it about an hour ago. Really love it! :yeah: The only one complaint I have is that they got the U-boat all wrong. VIIC doesnt have 2 stern tubes and the interior is all wrong. Too wide. But other than that, I loved it. It earns it's place on my submarine movie shelf.

Agree about the inaccuarices but still pretty good considering its age (the year I was born).

If they are the only things wrong it can't be a bad movie.

Actually, the entire sub was ridiculously wrong and inconsistent! :har:
Still, if you can forgive that, they did a great a great job of building tension, portraying a fair fight, and also showing both sides of the story. Great film.

I always say it looks to me like they got some stock prop sub parts and put them into somebody's living room.
But the shots aboard the real DE are partly what made me choose destroyers when I joined the navey. Truly a great sea movie! Also one of those rare cases where the movie is actually better than the book (or so the reviews I've read say).
[edit] I was just reading the description at Wiki, and they have some interesting details about the crew of USS Whitehurst, which played the fictional USS Haynes in the movie.
The destroyer escort USS Haynes was portrayed by USS Whitehurst (DE-634), filmed in the Pacific Ocean near Oahu, Hawaii. Many of the Whitehurst's crewmen acted in the film: The phone talkers, the gun and depth charge crews, the sailor fishing, and all of the men seen abandoning ship, were Whitehurst sailors. The ship's commanding officer, Lieutenant Commander Walter Smith, played the engineering officer. He is the man seen reading comics (Little Orphan Annie) during the lull before the action.

I love it when they do stuff like that.

Me too. If you've got extras behaving the way an actual crew would, because the extras are an actual crew, it just adds that bit of realism.

Another obscure fact:
For those of you who watch(ed) the original STAR TREK televison show the episode called "Balance of Terror" was based on "The Enemy Below".
I remember the first time I watched TEB (must have been around 1965) I was so upset when I saw that at least one of the torpedoes was going to hit.
Salute !!!

No so obscure fact! And they did a wonderful job converting the story to a futurist space one!
I have just watched this movie yesterday, a wonderful movie, it’s now definitely my second best naval movie after "Das Boot" off course. It’s one of the rarest movie which show you the two sides and no good/bad guy distinction.

That's one thing I like about movies like this. Das Boot, The Enemy Below, and other similar movies changed my opinion of the Nazis. I used to be all "America is the very best. We're the good guys...etc" but I've seen the war from different points of view and it makes it all the more interesting to learn about.
I have an idea for a new GT thread now...

If a movie can change someone's opinion, then it's a very powerful movie indeed.
It reminds me of when I was all like, "Oh, why do we mourn for Allied bomber pilots this much, the German civilians suffered more"*, then I played a level of Birds of Steel, attacking the Rhur with several gruppen attacking me, and a crap-load of flak... :o

Over the years, movies like this have slowly changed my opinion. The first time I saw Das Boot, I thought "Wow. These aren't bad guys. The Germans were just doing what they thought was right." or something along that line.
You should also watch "All Quiet on the Western Front" if you haven't watched yet, I have watched the one filmed in 1979, its shows the WW I from the side of the germans.
This is the opening quote :
"It will try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped shells, were destroyed by the war."
Very good movie.

Very good movie.
Not nearly as good as the original from 1930, and neither one comes close to the book.

Wow. You need to watch it. Now! It's a very good movie that really makes you think about WW1. I watched it a few months ago. I really loved it.

I put that in there for the purpose of the argument. Certain movies really opened my eyes and made me think that the "USA! USA! USA!" opinion isn't the right way to look at things.

The part that makes me laugh, is the countdown to launch torpedoes.:haha:
The only thing I really don't like about the film, is the sub crew. They have their new-guy-is-the nazi character. It is a post War film and I don't think Hollywood knew what to do with Nazis yet.
