(Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Friday will nominate U.S. Senator John Kerry to replace Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, marking his first major step in the overhaul of his national security team on the cusp of his second term.

Obama settled on Kerry, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the 2004 Democratic presidential candidate, after U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice withdrew from consideration last week. The Massachusetts Democrat is expected to win easy confirmation from his Senate colleagues.

Obama will announce Kerry's nomination at 1:30 p.m. EST but will withhold any decision on a new defense secretary, administration officials said. The president has held off in the face of a growing backlash from critics of former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel, considered a leading candidate to replace Leon Panetta at the Pentagon.

This was an expected decision.

If he is not nominated he will have such a long face.

With this nomination, and the probable nomination of Chuck Hagel as Secretary of Defense, it will be the first time in many years those positions will have been simultaneously held by decorated war veterans; in all, good choices...

I read an article calling for Hagen earlier.

Both would be a great choice.

Hilary was ok, but in some countries (like the middle east) it is hard for a woman to be taken seriously, no matter how assertive she is.

Not being mysogynistic, just citing culturalism. It's just how thier brain is wired.

I like Kerry personally.

(a friend of mine spent 3 years in Saudi Arabia, they do not like their women doing anything other than spitting out kids, or laying there concieving one. They are a chore to deal with diplomatically, because they hate us paleskins)

lying tax cheat.
a tax cheat

Are those two the same peope who say rich business people should be given tax breaks as their increasing wealth creates growth in the economy?

If he was cheating his taxes he would be doing something illegal, as he isn't then he is not a tax cheat, don't complain about something you both support just because it isn't someone from team R that is doing it

The thing with Kerry is he was destroyed when running for President. Parks his yacht in another state to avoid tax. Yet, some how all is forgotten and the guy smells like roses. I don't get it.

Is there a legal requirement that he berth his yacht somewhere other than Rhode Island?

Same reason that a certain former Mass. Senator gets a pass on DWI homicide because his last name is Kennedy. Their ideological allies that dominate the media shield them from such negativity. Obama gets the same treatment.

Were any of the controversial acts or statements they have made over the years been uttered or done by a Republican the man would have been flayed alive in the press.

Y'know people often reference how democracy works until people discover they can vote themselves presents. Well I think we now live in an age where the press has discovered it's more profitable to shape the news rather than merely report it. It's their bread and circuses and it is tearing our country apart.

There is not but it is a blatant tax evasion. Kerry claims the boat is docked there for long term maintenance. The boat is new. Just what maintenance will a new vessel need? He evades a sales tax waiting six months before bringing the boat to his home state. It was cleverly played. Sure there is no laws to dissuade this. However, it draws the kind of character Kerry is. No better then the blowhards running DC who claim to be looking out for the little guy. Its a crock.

At work, We started to talk about Kerry and how he was "smeared by the right" for the Swift boat thingy.:haha: I said it was true, because I know two swift boat vets that served around him (same RON). I didn't get those syllables out of my mouth, when the retort came: "WHAT ABOUT BUSH! BUSH DIDN'T DO ANYTHING!" So, what I learned from the conversation, when in doubt, attack Bush.:haha::shifty:

How can there be a tax evasion if there is no legal requirement?

You mean tax avoidance, everyone has the fundamental right to be able to pay the minimum amout of taxes they are legally required to.
Do you choose to pay more tax than you have to?
What he is doing is no more than me claiming back VRT and VAT on my car or me driving to Enniskillen to buy cases of wine for myself.

Are they just like the swifties who served "around" him who were shown to be lying while they swore they had witnessed events they couldn't have been present at?:hmmm:
Thank you, I didn't think this topic could get better than two people complaining against something they support, but you just made it.
Swift boating :har::har::har::har::har::har::har::har::har:

OK, I'll go with the avoidance. It is another way to say it. It is not a fundamental right to pay the minimum. There are no rights per say. There is tax code and you pay your taxes under the code. But, as you say, people look to avoid paying their correct share. Or, tax evasion. So Kerry knowingly parks his yacht in another state claiming long term maintenance. Let me guess, there is not one person or business in his state that can care for a yacht. You see, the explanation is offered by Kerry is lame at best. Call it what it is....evading taxes of $500,000.00.

Only Joe Biden believes one should pay more taxes then required under the code. It is our patriotic duty according to Joe. If that is the case what kind of patriot was just nominated as SoS? Welcome to the shady world of politics in the US. Where the general voting public is not only to forget all the negative press....it is expected.

Financial hypocrisy aside, I heard a rumour that if Kerry goes to SoS then this man is looking to run for Kerrys seat:

All Obama cares about is someone he can control ...
not sure if Senator Kerry is a man he can control,
but I am very positive that Ms Rice was a woman he could control.

The whole story on how Rice came about the controlled story from the CIA she gave has yet to be revealed due to a woosy Hillary still recovering from jet lag and avoiding memory lag in the US Senate hearings, but if it didn't come from the highest office in the land in the middle of a very big election.

Then where did it come from?

I remember 8 years ago when Kerry was running for President and a woman in Iowa was asked why she didn't vote for kerry and she said,

"He just didn't look like somone she would invite home for dinner"

I can honestly say I never seen a movie with Reagan. In my minds eye he was only a President. Similar to James Stewart who was an actor in my minds eye. Not a WW2 pilot. My minds eye sees Bush Sr as a pilot and President. This became apparent to me after reading Fly Boys.

There was way to many coincidences concerning Bengazi and the crew at hand that bungled it. Rice was fed what she was to say. Election time answer was advising the incident was under investigation. Hillary has a convenient fainting spell and can not testify.
