View Full Version : The British Invasion continues!
I saw this on TV last night, about food venders who sell their special prepared food out of trucks, which is nothing new really. But this gentlemen is from the UK, and sells Fish and Chips for around $7.00 per order.
He calls his famous dessert a "British Sweetie",lol Which for him is a deep fried Mars candy bar! Dips it in a thin batter, then deep fries it. Once its done, he adds powdered sugar on top. Geez, that would put a diabetic in a coma!
Is that what a British dessert is really like!?!

Scotland are famous for their 'deep fried' anythings. So I'd say north of Jim.

First saw that kind of crap in Edinburgh last year :yep:
The Scots will fry anything as long as it tastes like chocolate & whisky. :har:
How many pieces of fish do you get with an order in the UK?
Or does it depend where you get it?
And lastly, what type of fish do they mostly use? The article about this cook, says he uses several different types, so I was just curious.
Best one I heard of was the deep fried pizza... :nope:
In regards to fish and chips, it usually depends on the place (not plaice :O:) that you order it from, but it's usually one or two pieces. Size usually isn't too bad, enough to grace a plate, is around here anyway.
Fish, well the big three are the most popular Plaice, Haddock and Cod. Cod is the most popular and traditional...but thanks to overfishing it's also the most expensive, and chances are that the Cod that you eat won't come from anywhere local to the place you buy it at.
Disclaimer: I don't usually actually eat Fish and Chips, more of a Sausage and Chips man myself...not a big fan of fish...which, living in an old fishing town, can be a bit awkward...
On a...slightly...related note, if you like railways, fish and history, you could do worse than to have a gander at this:

Don't they have a special nickname for sausage over there?:)
Love the steam engines! Fun to envision operating one, until you realize what a dirty job that was years ago. All that coal dust and smoke. Imagine the health problems they had back then.

Most classic is Banger, as in Bangers and Mash (Sausage and Mashed Potato).
Yes, it's an oft forgotten fact that a lot of drivers who switched from Steam to diesel were glad of the fact that they could go to work in one set of clothes and come back from work in the same set! :haha:
Now days we have Red Robin sports bars/restaurants over here. They have artic cod fish and chips. Best I've ever had over any other in the US.... even better than 'ol Arthur Treacher's fish and chips that was around in the 70s.
Sadly tho, the rest of the food at Red Robins sucks.

Bangers, that's it!!
Oberon, have you ever had a chance to ride on any of the steam trains that still operate over there on short excursions? There aren't any close to where I live, sadly, would love to try it just once.
As for the Fish and Chips, if the fiish is as good as it looks, I want a piece at least 12 inches long, and a mountain of chips!:) Its now officially on my bucket list, to get to the UK and get the original Fish and Chips! Of course as long as it is going to take me to save up to get there, I might have to get a loan from the British Govt for the meal, lol

Fish and Chips, the most popular dish for decades in the UK but beaten into second place by Chicken Tikka Masala in recent years and even that has been topped now by Chinese Stir-Fry apparently:

I regularly eat all three do I'm well happy :smug:

And of course the batter has to be beer batter and the frying must be done in lard, especially for the twice cooked chips

:yep: Indeed, I've been lucky enough to ride on quite a few of the Steam railways here. Was up north on one during my honeymoon in fact, I'm lucky enough to have a wife who also quite enjoys steam railways. :yep:
Lovely scenery too! :yep:

Was a lovely day out, rained for most of it, but it's Yorkshire so it was to be expected. Gave an insight in to how quickly the water comes up, there was a river near Goathland station that was quite the raging torrent, the noise was competing with the steam engines! :haha:

Cod is, for some reason, the favoured choice throughout the UK, but in my home town - traditionally associated with fishing on a large scale - you're hard pushed to find it as the preferred option in the chippies. Haddock rules.

Sadly, most children these days will think that your talking about Call of Duty.
So most people in the UK play Cliffs of Dover, then?

A few years back a friend of mine ask me to drive to St John's, Newfoundland, with him to visit his ailing step mother. There I was introduced to the local fish and chips. It was unbelievable. Fresh cod and PEI potatoes.
By the end of our one week stay we were eating it three times a day.:O:
Have not had any better since.

Ah, roll-mop herrings, I occasionally get some. Delicious, and even better as I'm the only one in the house that likes them.

mmm..., i do love the roll mops  But in the fish 'n' chip shops down here it's usually barramundi, snapper or flake (shark).
I went for a ride on a steam train when I was young tacker, all I really remember was that every time I stuck my head out the window I got a face full of coal/soot! :haha:
Had some nice flathead with chips and some calamari rings today for lunch. Very nice.
Steamed fish any day of the week. :DL

I once ate squid on my honeymoon in Cyprus 1984 and that's about as adventurous as I get with sea creatures :)

I've had pickled herring, in small amounts it isn't too bad! Couldn't live on a steady diet of it though. Have to have Fish & Chips made the old fashion way (or should say the original British version), sometime in my life!
If that's as adventurous as you'll get Jim, then you wouldn't want to have this food we had at our annual state fair. Now you'll understand why I haven't been there in over 40 years:haha:
