It is said, that there are none in SH3. And yet... I started having doubts, after I attacked a convoy, got countered by escorts and than strange thing happened. There were two corvs, out of which, one had no charges at all. Second had,so I got bombed, but whenever the other made runs over me there were no wabos. It had to spend them somewhere, right?
Second attack, other convoy. I approach, only to find a seeking destroyer. It was rather unlikely, that she was looking for me,but I have hidden. When I resurfaced, there was a freighter on fire on a horizon. I didn't fire a single shot. Who did then?

Aircraft or weather could and probably did cause the damage.
In GWX there are AI U-boats scripted into some of the theatres of war also.

They sound better than stock SH5's miserable excuse for AI.

The AI in GWX can't submerge or fire torpedos but they can and will attack ships with their deck gun.

I have not seen a U-boat, but I have seen a convoy that had 3 burning ships in it.
I also was tracking a convoy one time when a new warship suddenly appeared- a British S-type submarine surfaced and joined the tail end of the convoy! I fired a torpedo at it, it missed, then the sub accelerated to 16 knots and dived. About 15 minutes later it re-surfaced at the back of the convoy but I was now well behind and had no torpedoes left (and I would have had to wait until they were out of sight before surfacing and racing around them to try again).
That was cool though, I really was hoping to sink that damned sub!

The S-Class dived and then surfaced?

Yes, it disappeared for quite a while, then reappeared. Unless my sonarman is totally incompetent (and I have not ruled it out) it must have dived then resurfaced.
I have owned sh3 since 2005 and this is the first time I have seen that behavior, it seemed awfully cool.
I am running GWX 3.

A report about a diving S-class :)
I love SH3 :D What other game is so simple that with comparably little effort we can all become experts in playing it and yet so complex that the fog of war can confuse us. I don't think a diving AI vessel has been programmed in the game.
However, the report about a diving S-class made me want to read a war diary about the attack. What was the weather like, what the lighting conditions were, how high were the waves, was the u-boat submerged or surfaced, how often were the enemy observed, on the surface or through the periscope, how many enemies were present, what pattern did they have, how did they behave after the u-boat's presence was revealed, with what method was the S-class's speed and course estimated, how reliable had the sonar man been during the patrol, at what times did things happen etc.
In short, Madkiwi's report made me realise the purpose of BdU's order to keep exact war diaries during the war - reports made amidst the fog of war need to be detailed and structured in order for a possibility of objective assessment.

Another strange encounter, near Scapa Flow. I got jumped by a destroyer. I t was a crap, beacuse I was over a shallow reef ( small plane of 35m of depth, on a open ocean, and bumped by a destroyer :stare:). The destroyer also had none depth charges. None, it only followed me, and kept navigating airplanes on my position. What a destroyer near her base ( It was like 200 NM from Scapa Flow) was doing without any kind of ASW weapons?

Not all classes carried them.
