Well I was close to Rabaul base when I picked up a sound contact... merchant pretty far away... so I surfaced and start chasing it... it was pitch black night and after almost 2 hours of chase when I got close to it - suddenly a radar contact :o... a biplane comes straight on me and misses me for 10 meters while I was diving... it's early war... second patrol... how come?

Maybe there was a merchant ship and a plane heading down the same bearing and you just happened to miss the plane.

I always do a Air Search on Radar before I surface.

Perhaps it was Dowly.

He is crazy enough...

He also happens to be a ferret.

From Finland.

Who flys.

I love Subsim :D

Are you playing stock?

Some mods have a few type planes that fly at night, usually with radar.
Never seen a bi-plane though.

Maybe it was Washing Machine Charlie, although he is more famous for his nocturnal raids against Henderson Field on Guadalcanal. :salute:

Not certain, but I think Charlie was a monoplane. Does anyone know if Japan had any operational biplanes in-theater?

I had a IJ aircraft bomb me at night once. It was early evening, but rather dark. I was very close to a japanese base, though. Scared the crap out of me. Don't ask me what kind of plane it was either.

You were close to a major Japanese base and they have an airstrip port and a HQ so it is possible.:ping:

Strictly speaking, it could be any aircraft, but was usually a g4m (Betty) bomber, which is a twin engined heavy.

From what I have read this sounds like a "Jean". So far it is the only torpedo bi-plane that I could find that was still in use during the 40's. They are carrier based and you should not see any past 1943.

Thats just happened to me,not quite dark had this target lined up perfectly (manual) flooded the tube an just about t let one off when there was an almighty explosion ,slight damage to the casing, was at periscope depth and stopped ,few secs later saw plane fly over the freighter . No chance after that ,the target started zigzagging ,that was off the coast of Japan.
