I just received Silent Hunter 4 as a gift.
BUT! It is the British Standard Edition from England. :shifty:
I am in the process of returning it for the Gold Edition. :shifty: This means i will be enlisting in the US Silent Service sometime soon. I have been in the U-Bootwaffe and I need a bit of change. :har:

Welcome to the Fleetboat mate.
It will be interesting to see if you do better against the Japanese than you did against the Yanks and Brits. :D:D
Check out the Bag of tricks thread by Rockin Robins. Lots of good stuff there.
Couple of tips.
Don't put the game in the programs files folder but a "games" folder.
Don't use SH4.gu to launch but find Sh4.exe.
Be sure to load the DirectX9 that comes on the disk.
Good luck and good hunting.
Magic
Welcome aboard Red. :salute:
Getting the Gold Edition on disc is the way to go.
You don't have to do this, but I would recommend you read up on the super-mods, RFB, TMO, FOTRS, GFO, OM, and RSRDC and pick the flavor you like best. You can dabble with stock, but you will most likely want to make use of mods, and would then have to ditch your career. Few here stick with stock for very long.
Good hunting!

So you finally got 4. Excellent.:Kaleun_Thumbs_Up: I would advise you to go ahead and shop the forums for a megamod, too. If you choose RFB, bear in mind that it will mess with the U-Boat missions expansion a bit and may not work as expected. (Specifically, the type XXI, replacing the Type XVIII takes hull damage at 200m, which is nowhere near crush depth for that boat. I haven't found the cause of the bug)

The tipoff is in the name: Real Fleet Boat is tailored for the US side. If you use it to play the German side, YMMV.

I have read around on megamods. TMO+RSRDC looks like the one for me.
I'm very excited to get this. How big are the downloads for TMO and RSRDC?
I loved Run Silent Run Deep. :woot:

Welcome to the fleet boats. :salute:
Now that you're underway, we need you to do a hull inspection. :ahoy:
Good choice on mods. TMO & RSRDC is my favorite mix. :()1:

EMERGENCY QUESTION!
How big is the SH4 1.5 UBM patch download? Sending this back to England is out of the question.
EDIT: I'm going to try and send it back. It might take over a month to get there and then, I'll have to get the Gold Edition which will take longer.

I purchased the UBM patch download a few days ago. It is 637 Mb

Do all the patches have to be installed in order? Or can I just get UBM and that's it?

IIRC you can just patch the UBM directly. Also, it is available for download via Amazon, so you should be able to follow the Subsim portal to Amazon to give the forum a boost!

Yet the Dev Team went through the trouble of replacing the never-completed Type XVIII with the Type XXI. :shifty: Thank you for stating the obvious, however. :Kaleun_Wink:

So my British Standard edition will work with TMO when I get the UBM patch?
Will the British version work in American computers? The one I have is unopened. I don't want to open something that doesn't work.

Of course it was obvious. But, if it was obvious to you, what was the point of your complaint? That the RFB team only did what they set out to do?

I wasn't complaining. I was stating a known issue for RedOctober1984 to know. If I want to complain about anything, it is about how someone who only joined a few months ago makes a snide comment about the purpose of a mod like I am some sort of idiot.

Yes it will but it will have a funny accent.
:haha:
Seriously though, it should work with no problems as people in the U.K. and elsewhere around the Globe play TMO also.

Hinrich, I greatly appreciate the help you've given me over the years.
I sucked it up and tried out the stock game. It runs like a dream. I am downloading UBM as I type this. So, my next question is where to get TMO and RSRDC. I don't care to have Germans in the Pacific War too much. I tried out the quick mission "Battle of Midway" and it looks like i'll be spending lots of my time with this lovely game. UBM is going to be done in 15 hours. So tomorrow, i'll be curling up with hot chocolate and my laptop.
I don't want to play the stock 1.5 much. I want to jump into TMO+RSRDC like i did with GWX3 and Silent Hunter 3.

They are in the downloads section here at SubSim.

I'd read the threads about both to be sure you get all that you need.

Thank you. I am downloading the UBM on my slow internet right now. TMO and RSRDC will have to wait a couple of days for my internet to recover from downloading something as big as 600mb. :yep:
By wednesday, i'll have started on TMO and RSDRC downloads hopefully. I've played a few quick missions and I think i'm in love. Thats with just the PC-DVD UK Standard Stock game.
I have wonderful things in my future. :yeah:
Good to hear it's working fine on your system!
And yeah, as far as I know, the origin of your disc doesn't matter as far as the expansion. Hopefully you get it loaded soon.

Hinrich, I have been a member of this forum for long enough to learn that it is part of the culture here to be respectful of the hard work of others, especially the supermodders who have added so much to this game.
As for making you feel like an idiot, I certainly regret and apologize for that. I did not intend a personal attack. Rather. I was trying to point out an obvious fact which you seemed to have overlooked.

I accept your apology, but you assume too much. Your assumption that I have overlooked the purpose of the mod is incorrect. I researched both RFB and TMO for months before modding. I was acutely aware of RFB's dedication to realism for the American side, which is why I chose it. To me, TMO was geared for raw difficulty, which is not historically accurate because IJN ASW doctrine was neglected and tactical application was irregular, at best.
I would recommend avoiding assumption of this nature in the future to avoid similar misunderstandings.

And thank you for the hectoring lecture. You still don't get it, do you?
Oh, never mind!

Now what, in your opinion, is the "GWX" of Silent Hunter 4. What balances realism with gameplay?

That's a tough one. The two biggies are both worthwhile. One of the deciding factors for me is that I've been to Midway, and the in-game version is nothing at all like the real deal. Only RFB has a Midway that looks like it should. That's a small thing, but it makes a big difference to me.

I don't think we've yet found the best settings for balance in either mod, yet I think they do exist, it just takes a lot of work or should I say testing.

True. Once you start looking at the "innards", SH 3-4-5 are all very tweakable and can be developped a lot further, witness Nisgeis' 3d TDC/Radar unit for example.
I have been spending time lately tweaking the sinking mechanism and you can get major changes by changing the variables in the Zones.cfg file. There is still a lot that can be tweaked/modded.
