Hey all, I have decided to sink a few merchants. Been a year or so since I was last on here.

What are people's opinion on SH5. I'm considering getting a copy off ebay.

I have pretty much only ever played silent hunter 3 as far as sub sim's go.
Is it that much better than 3 or not?

Asking about SH5 on the SH3 forum is likely to get you a lot of folks who stick with SH3 because of what it still has to offer, and find SH5 severely lacking. If you ask this on the SH5 forum you'll get people who love SH5 and consider it much better that SH3.

If you look on the SH5 forum you'll also find that this question gets asked by somebody on such a regular basis that it's getting very old. All you have to do is look and you'll get your answer.

Ow thanks alot, I really never thought of asking there.
Did it not cross your mind that I might want the opinion of a silent hunter 3 player?

If I go to SH5 area I will get obvious support for it. People on SH3 will tell me why they haven't moved. which is what I want.

Thanks for the obvious generic response. I won't bother looking at old questions asked before that are out dated thanks. I will use the search functions available to me when I please and ask questions on here as I see fit.

It crossed my mind to wonder if you really wanted to know. It doesn't seem that you do.

Then why ask at all? If you want to stick with SH3, do so. If you want people to reinforce the opinion you already hold, why bother?

You're certainly free to do either. My point was that so many people ask the same question so often that the answer should be obvious by now.

[edit] I've been thinking, and the more I think the more I'm usually wrong. Maybe you were just casually wondering if SH5 is worth it, and maybe I've heard that question so much I'm tired of it. If that's the case, I apologize.

Yes, it's worth it, especially for five bucks. It's not the sim SH3 is, but it's a great game, if that's what you're after. Do check out some of the threads I linked and read my previous answers there. The differences are vast, but there is good in both. It all depends on what you're looking for.

Any where I go to a review site on games, they sing its praises. Its always the same in my opinion. Game reviewers don't ever tell the truth.

The worst game I ever got was hearts of iron 3 after glowing reviews everywhere. That game never worked for at least 2 years before it got patched properly.

I did look in the SH5 forum and one of the first threads I saw was ...
Is this game playable yet?.

SH3 is one of the few games I regulary return to and everytime I come back to this forum there are always die hard fans around.
I just thought I would get a few opinions on here, thoughts on SH5 and why they stick with SH3.
I think a lot of people in the SH5 forum probably haven't got SH3.

Anyway sorry for getting snappy earlier. I had another thread open and was getting stressed with a problem I was having.

Right, My problem is fixed, I set sail for the north sea in 5 mins.
Look out limeys I'm coming:arrgh!:

SH5 is beautiful. It has the best graphics I've ever seen (most of what I've seen is from screenshots and a tiny bit of experimentation before my computer decided it couldn't run it) and some awesome harbors. My problem is you can't run a Type II or Type IX and there are only seven merchant types, mostly American (SH3 has well over one hundred if you run the MFM). SH5 also has a very unhistorical campaign system, and a bunch of other things I won't go into now. If and when I finally get a better computer I'll probably run all three of the extant versions, because it's just the way I am.

I think a lot of people in the SH5 forum probably haven't got SH3.
Possibly. I think SH5 is the best submarine game ever made, and people who want a fun submarine game love it for its look and feel. Unfortunately what SH3 has is a fantastic random campaign and that makes it a much better simulation, which is what appeals to many more of us.

On the other hand I've also mentioned many times that I still play the eighteen-year-old Aces Of The Deep, so my passion certainly to the simulation area.

Anyway sorry for getting snappy earlier.
I probably deserved it. I sometimes describe myself as "quick to judge, quick to condemn and quick to kick myself for being an idiot."

That almost certainly won't stop me the next time somebody asks the same question. :dead:

Iambecomelife's Merchant Fleet Mod. Forty freighters, nineteen tankers, most of them in American and British folders, plus four small freighters and several fleet auxiliary vessels. It takes a huge amount of memory to run.

Sounds good! Does it come with the appropriate recognition manual references or are you forced to guestimate?

That I don't know. My computer won't run it. I'm pretty sure that it does though. I use its pictures as reference for my own Ship Names mod.
