Hi all.
I'm quite new here, having just recently found SH4.
Might I say that this forum seems quite exceptional, full of good info, tips, and helpful people!
As a proof of that I have my SH4 installed, updated, modded, tweaked to almost perfection by just reading and searching these posts!
Congrats to everyone on such a good forum!
I'm now starting to learn the ropes, I have been reading a lot (downloading more!!), and to be honest, I'm quite "anxious" for my first mission.
I have been running the tutorial missions a bit just to get used to the interface, capabilities, practising techniques, and to properly configure VoiceAttack.
Oh, and yes, just watched RSRD! Quite good!
So, thanks to everyone and I hope I will be posting some AAR soon!
Now back to my Recog manuals!!
Cheers
Barracuda.

Welcome aboard. Always good to have another skipper. Now get out there and start scraping and painting.
Good Luck and Good Hunting! :salute:

Thanks All!!
Still testing both TMO and RFB.
Both great up untill now.
Still having some issues with manual targeting. Have tried several methods and DOK seems to get the best (quickest?) results, but I'm not sure if it works well with TMO... with escorts! :D
So far, I've tested a quick mission (sinking the carrier, can't remember the name) but did a monumental mistake!
I'm using RFB, so guess where I measured the height with the stadimeter?
Yes, NOT from the flight deck.... ahahaha.
So an entire spread of 6 fishes failed, but the 3 DD didn't...
Almost lost her to the deeps after 2 compartments fully flooded!
Escaped the DD but I probably didn't escape desk duty until the end of the war..

Nice to see that your having lots of fun. This is a game that if you leave you will soon come back. Its changing daily thanks to efforts of very talented modders.

Indeed! Much appreciative of that!
Another try yesterday, trying to fine tune my manual targeting skills using the Navigation tutorial in RFB (eheh), Big merchant to my port, setup 90 angle really quick, range 600 yards.
Four torpedoes in the water, 2 hits, 1 dud.. Wait, where's the other one? What's that thing making circles in the.. BOOOOM!
Serveral years later scuba divers will have lots of fun diving on a half submerged merchant (really shallow waters) and some 500 yards away the sub that killed that merchant and comitted suicide shortly after.

Right, this is the best forum, bar none.
Don't lose patience on patrol. Submariners were, had to be, the most patient people around.
My bad habit is firing too soon in the approach. I can't wait until a hit is likely, and mostly miss.
Happy cruising ! :arrgh!:

The movie is good, but the book is much better. Ned Beach is a good writer. And better still is his first-person factual account "Submarine". You can learn a lot that will help you in the game by reading any of the first-person accounts to see how they actually did things.

Thanks raymond6751 and BigWalleye.
Indeed, itchy tringer finger does not help!
Did another try with a single mission, the third from the top on RFB+RSRDC, hitting a Carrier TF.
Waited patiently, popped up the scope only for a few secs at a time as one of the DD was right behind me at about 600 yds, did some TMA to get proper speed and course, and setup myself for a 90 deg shoot. Fired 4 torps, with a kink on the first one, which actually made it miss by less than a yard from the Carrier's bow.
Another one went wide, but the other two hit perfectly, around 5 and 20 from the bow at a depth of 15 ft! Nice big holes extending from the impact area, under the keel, even right to starboard.
It was very interesting watching such a big ship running at 33 kts listing to port, and to stern, just like a car that lost the front wheels!
If there were planes on deck, they would all have gone to the drink!
Unfortunately I pressed Ctrl+F11 to take a screenshot and that crashed SH...
Still, very satisfying!
Will try to get the RSRD book then!!
Cheers!

Whow!
These are the "Ivan the fool" torpedoes!
I got a lot of them. 3 times in one patrol and it was very disturbing.
Even after the duds problem was off after July 1943 I got some.
Every time I was lucky enough to avoid the shot but it was very close.
I think that the only thing to avoid the hit is to shoot immerged and dive 15 feet more when you see the problem... if you can see it of course!
You can also accelerate but only if the fish is not an accoustic one.
By the way there is nothing better to put the mess in a convoy if the circle is wide enough.:know:
