Hi there

I am an amature writer and i love starting new ideas. I am just curious to see if you could pick any time period to be a submariner, what age would you choose and why?

I am thinking WW1 because the subs are not as advanced and seems more pioneer like adventure.

Hmm...

Probably right now, what with no one trying to blow me up :)

Definitely right now. Even considering the relative safety of modern subs, I reckon I'd still be a nervous wreck though.

I actually had quite a vivid dream a few nights ago about sinking to the bottom in a Type IX U boat, admittedly it was after playing the exact same scenario out in SH3 before bed, but it was terrifying :P

1960. Around the world underwater, with Beach as captain.

I volunteered for subs when I was in radio school in 1969. They didn't take me.

I did wonder why the Warsaw Pact's sub campaign got even better around then...

I'd serve in the Cold War 1980s. Ive got an army family so joining the navy is unheard of. I plan to go air force. But if i had to go to the navy and i had to pick a time to go, it'd be the 1980s.

Thats my big concern right now. My height. Im tall....Hopefully short enough to fly an A-10.

I love the A-10 Warthog and wish Canada would buy a squadron

So, when would you want to serve as a submariner?

For me, it would be WW1.

As i said, i think it would be a pioneer like adventure compared to todays subs.

Then again, i am too tall for our subs and my job is anti surface / anti air plus electronic warfare.

Despite my enjoyment of reading, and to a lesser extent playing via pc, naval-themed things, ol' D_C here doesn't "do," water well.

Hence my joining the Army and now being in the Air Force Reserve. :salute:

What age? That would depend on which side. :D

I don't think wwii duty in a Uboat would be all that swell :nope:

WW2 duty in a Gato or a Balao wouldn't be too bad. I'd like to do that. U-boats? Not so much. American boats seem easier on the crew. Except for S-Boats. Forget that. That is as bad as a U-boat.

No. S-boats are not at all my favorite. I'm still deciding which fleet boat class i like best.

Post Korean conflict and pre-nuclear age

Diesel boats are in my blood since I turned 19 back in 1963 and reported aboard my first sub just a few days later on April 6th. Four days later the USS Thresher SSN 593 sank off the east coast April 10th 1963 ...

My mom was a little worried after that, but that's what mom's do.

It was a great time of serving with some great sailors that I may never meet again till I get to heaven.

The 1960's also saw the advent of the regulas missile and our own boat the USS Salmon was considered for becoming a refueling submarine for the old jet seaplane that was canceled. I forgot the name of it PB-6 I think.

Anyway's the 1960's were great and then came the nukes

I'm an S boat fan. Any time from their maiden voyages to & including ww2.
One of my favourite places on the web are the "through the looking glass" pages on Pigboat.com. Especially the tour through USS S-4 on Christmas day 1919. I don't know what it is about that era but the photographs are wonderfully evocative.
