I'd give the patched vanilla game a little bit of playtime, just so you can actually appreciate (or even not appreciate) the changes made by the various mods.

After that, I'd recommend TMO and RSRD. TMO adds lots of nice ambiance and realism changes, makes the Japanese air force act a little more realistically, and is overall oft considered one of the best supermods for SH4.

RSRD tempers off the difficulty of TMO a bit by giving you more realistic patrols and missions, not the wildly dangerous and unrealistic ones the stock game gives you.

Also, I'm not a fan of the look of the water in TMO, so I use the Improved Stock Environment mod (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=194657) to give me better looking water.

These are the mods I use and recommend, but keep in mind I've only tried a very select few mods out, so don't be afraid to explore yourself. Check out the SH4 Mods Workshop section of the forums (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/forumdisplay.php?f=219) and be sure to read the stickies there. They recommend plenty of great and popular mods for anybody to start off with.:sunny:

TMO Harder to play

RFB more realistic

RSRDC reworks all shipping lanes.


So it just what do you prefer, tougher destroyers(TMO) or less ship traffic(RFB).
RSRDC is a mod that makes sipping lanes more like they actually were in real life.

Don't start with TMO immediately!! You will have nightmares... I agree with previous posts... first patched stock... later what you prefer...

I think the torpedo tube doors need scraping and repainting. Get on that.

I use TMO, RSRDC, with MaxOptics. :up:
