When I first read about it, it brought a smile to my face. Until I realised how many of my friends and fammily would have been dead, including me, without modern sanitation.
A place to think, a place to read, the ceramic throne of the modern man. Taken for granted and never recognised as the savior of millions. Cholera, typhoid and dysentery were flushed from our homes.

The World Toilet Organization (WTO) is a global non-profit organization committed to improving toilet and sanitation conditions worldwide. WTO focuses on toilets instead of water, which receives more attention and resources under the common subject of sanitation. Founded in 2001 with 15 members, it now has 151 member organizations in 53 countries working towards eliminating the toilet taboo and delivering sustainable sanitation.
In 2001, the World Toilet Organization declared its founding day, 19 November, as World Toilet Day. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Toilet_Organization#cite_note-1) Since then, 19 November has been observed globally by its member organizations. In September 2009, a new website was launched dedicated to the celebration of World Toilet Day.
''We take pride for our industry, our empire, our civilisation. But without sanitation we are little more than beasts'' ~ Joseph P. Basalgette, father of modern sanitation

Of course, the term toillete means the entire sanitation system. Fresh water delivery, WC, showers and sewers.
And here's an interesting documentary about Basalgette and the london sewers

when the chips are going down let's face it, you can always dig a hole by a tree in the forest. What civilized humans miss most when supplies run low is good TP (toilet paper). Of course I realize in some nations a handful of sand has to do.

In places that lack true TP they tend to use tossed out newspaper or their left hand and then wash it or they have a pitcher which is used to run water across the area needing cleaning or a toilet with a water hose near it.In Rome they would use a sponge that was run through water.I highly doubt anyone would use sand that would be a bit uncomfortable after a few minutes walking about assuming you simply did not make a paste with sand and the other mixing together.
The left hand thing is a myth based on the assumption that Muslims wipe with the left hand the real reason they extend the right hand in greeting is because The Shaytaan [a devil] eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand. A dishonest Muslim will not place his hand over his heart after greeting you.

There is actually a World Toilet College (Imagine that diploma on your CV) and next year there will be an International Toilet Museum opening up in China.
