US President Obama: "The flickers of progress that we have seen must not be extinguished"

Burma is on a "remarkable journey" of reform that has much further to go, Barack Obama said as he made the first visit to the South East Asian nation by a serving US president.

A desire for change had been met by an agenda of reform, he said, and he was there to extend a "hand of friendship".

But, in a speech at Rangoon University, he urged Burmese people to accept Muslim Rohingyas after recent violence.

Crowds of people, some waving US flags, lined the streets as he arrived.

The visit was intended to show support for the reforms put in place by Thein Sein's government since the end of military rule in November 2010.

Activists have warned that the visit may be too hasty - political prisoners remain behind bars and ethnic conflicts in border areas are unresolved.

Might have been better to hold off until we see what happens in Myanmar before we start praising "change". :yep:

I'm still waiting to see if they're going to get those buried Spitfires out of there.

I doubt the Burmise will let those planes out of the country; they need them to modernize their own air force. :O:

Seriously Ob have you heard of any updates to the story over there? I'd surely love to see those birds fly again someday.

Sadly it's gone pretty quiet, as far as I know all the political papers have been signed, so in theory they should be heading out there any time now, but the last news reports were last month when the Telegraph unveiled one of the financial backers of the dig (the guys behind World of Tanks, believe it or not). It's probably going to take a while for them to find the boxes and then dig them up, apparently they're fairly deep. I'd estimate that we'll hear news sometime next month. Then it'll be a good six months before we get the first box back in the UK once the wrangling is all said and done.

Rumour has it there might be a Mossie down there too, now that would be nice. :yep:

At least there has been some movement in the project.

A Mosquito too? Wow! If so it would be a one of a kind no?

Not quite, there's quite a few Mossies still around, but currently only one flying which was recently restored in Australia. So it would be nice to have another in flyable condition. The Spits are one of a kind though, supposedly Mk XIVs and XIIIs which are quite rare birds. :yep:

Would not surprise me, those birds'll be worth a lot of money if they are as in a good condition as they think they might be.

I'm also told one bird has been reclaimed but can't name or post the source unfortunately :nope:
