I've been playing SHV for a while now, but i've never been able to figure out a good strategy for attacking convoys, both escorted and unescorted.
You guys feel like sharing some of your strategies?

Early in the war (1939-1941) attack on the surface; loose your torpedoes, then get your boat out of there.
From 1943-1945, submerged attacks maybe.
Always try to have a convoy coming head on at you if you can. Head right in amongst them all and let loose. Inside the convoy protects you as the escorts have a tough time picking you up with all the mayhem going on. Sounds of explosions, sinking ships, and all the rest changing course masks your location to a degree.
And better yet....If you can get near a ship that's sinking very slowly, stay put as it's great cover. Escorts won't come close enough to depth charge you and you can pick them off with your torpedos. If you're lucky enough to sink all the escorts and have a good idea the remaining cargo ship are unarmed [early war], you can chalk up even more tonnage with your deckgun once you run out of torpedos. And you can also chase them down if you have to.

Early on I like to attack on the surface at night. For realism, (and a lower silhouette), make sure the moon's not behind you and sneak in decks awash.
Once inside, the convoy provides lovely cover, so you can light 'em up at will as the escorts have a tough time sniffing you out amongst all the friendlies.
Good luck and happy hunting! :arrgh!:
I forgot to say I always attack submerged. I've never had any luck making an attack while surfaced.... night or day. Surfaced during the day IMO is asking for trouble....big trouble. At night you might be lucky once, after that you're asking for trouble. Especially if it ends up you're attacking a Task Force. I don't believe any Uboat Kaptain during WWII would take the chance attacking a convoy surfaced. A lone ship yes, but only if it can be seen they aren't armed.

Yes he would and did, but from what I read only at night. And I still I don't believe any Kaptain would during daylight hours. Not even Silent Otto. ;)

i am a bit rust after 1 year or two without the game but i always try to anticipate their paths and then i attack them while under the water because they can use cannons and other stuff to blow your submarine down.
but if you find a merchant ship or two lonely withou any scorts keep torpedos with u use the 88mm and shoot everything.:salute:
