View Full Version : Problems With 100% Realism Torpedoes

Hi again all,

Getting to grips with SH3 and the forums a bit now, both are new to me. I'm having a few problems with manual torpedo aiming on 100%.

First off, just to reassure you all, I've trawled these forums and found some excellent guides - mostly Dantenoc's Illustrated Guide - which have all been great helps. I'm on SH3 with GWX and SH3 Commander.

Finding a ship: not a problem, nor is plotting an intercept course or anything like that. Even gathering target data is not a problem, I've got quite good at doing this to within +/-10%.

There are two problems - the first is with speed. While I can guess/work out AOB and range pretty well, the speed is awful. How long do you have to leave the timer running? It always either gives me 2kts or 751kts, something silly like that, and I have to guess. If I leave it any longer than 15-20 secs it can ruin the shot totally, and the original range and AOB you put in could be completely off.

Secondly, once I've got the speed, AOB and range that I select on the Attack Periscope, the data's not sent through to the TDC. I gather all the data, then I have to go on the TDC, uncheck the 'manual input' button and twiddle in the numbers. Which can take 10 seconds, and ruin my shot, even as close as 1000m.

I suspect that it might be something to do with the difficulty settings, maybe the 'weapon officer assist' option? But when I turn 'weapon officer assist' on and 'only manual target data gathering' on, it puts the info in automatically.

Perhaps I should explain what I want out of the game here. I want to manually gather the data, then just press fire - in real life, I'd be shouting out the AOB, speed, etc and the bosun would put them in to the control room TDC. I shouldn't have to do it myself. I suspect there's some difficulty setting or button I need to press, if anyone knows what it is I'd be really grateful!

Hi, I could send you video about manual targeting, it really helps starting to realize how manual targeting should be done, perhaps you have skype ?

I couldn't attach the file. Yahoo said it's toooo big. So I uploaded it here for you:

If you're getting weird variations in target speed, it is likely that your sub is still moving while you're tracking your target. You have to be stationary, if possible. Also, it's ideal to fire with the Gyro angle being 000 degrees, but +-20 degrees is acceptable. Anything beyond that increases the risk of failure. You also have to strike the hull perpendicularly, or the firing pin won't be activated. Lastly, make sure your magnetic torps always pass below the keel, and that your impact torps are hitting the side.

It's also worth mentioning that ships in this game have a nasty habbit of maneuvering too quickly to avoid torpedoes. Try firing at the stationary ship in the Torpedo exam to get an idea of this.

I take it you are not using the 3:15 method for target speed

Cheers for your help, people. Troublous_Haze, that did solve a few bits on positioning but I don't have map updates on, so I can't do 3:15, to answer your question as well derrinurban. Luno, you may be right there about moving. Got back in last night and tried firing without moving (I normally stop the engines and just drift slowly at 1-2kts when firing), which helped.

Interestingly when I set all the realism options on - except God mode map updates - it still says I'm on 100% realism ... ?

The only way I can reliably get hits though is to guess the speed and just make sure I'm within 1000m to account for any errors. Which is fine, but I want to be able to shoot from 2-2500m if I have to.

You may also want to check this link: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=147667

It is aimed for people who does manual targeting. It does have all the needed tools to make manual targetings quickly without map contact updates.

Or just download and watch tutorials and you will get the idea.

Thanks for that - I haven't had chance to download the mod yet, but I've watched a bit of the tutorial and it seems dead on, exactly what I'm after! I'll report back when I've had a proper try.

Downloaded and using that now ... got into Scarpa Flow and managed to sink HMS Nelson (although it was stationary), along with some (moving) destroyers. This is exactly what I needed - thanks for the heads up!
